View Full Version : 62 Ford Wagon????

10-22-2003, 10:18 AM
I'm looking at a 62 Ford wagon. It doesn't have power steering and I was wondering if apower unit is hard to find. It's got a 390 in it and if I buy it I think I'd like to put a 302 in it eventually. Good Idea or bad?
Got any pics of one of these?

whats wrong with the 390?

i would think that the power steering boxes from some other full size ford would interchange with your box.

I wouldn't think you would have any problems finding a power steering unit to fit whether you ran the 390 or the 302. There're fairly common.

Clark I may be able to come up with a power steering unit for that from one of the Karb Kings. I'll find out later today and drop you a line. Also check your PM's...I wanna find out more info about that panel you were telling me about Saturday.

Sorry to break in on this thread,Clark, but did you ever ask your father about selling those '41 Dodge PU headlights??

I just thought a 302 would be better on gas. I know it's a tank and will not be good on gas. The 390 could go in a roadster or something.
Thanks for the pics. I like the blue one minus the wheels.

I'd think since the 390 produces more torque it would be more efficient to push around that heavy wagon than a dinky five-oh. Kinda like a big guy eats more than a small guy but doesn't have to expend as much energy to lift the barbell.

But maybe that's twisted logic. Fuel economy has never been a prime concern for me.

I think the 62 had the p/s assist on the drag link, not in the steering box!! I'm not sure, but it an easy conversion if you find one.
I owned a 62 wagon, put a ton of miles on it, it was 32 & ran great, had p/s but not P/B's & was a bitch to stop.
the 390 is a great motor & you can find 3 duece setups for em.KEEP THAT motor in it!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Clark,

Don't know if this will help, but I have a '65 Merc wagon that you can pick parts off of. It's got a good 390/C6, P/S, P/B, even under-dash A/C. You can take any parts you want or preferably the whole thing!

Here are a couple of pics of my old wagon. I looked into doing P/S on it and found a ton of stuff. Power Galaxie steering boxes fit and a bunch of the FE motors I found in the bone yards had mounting brackets and pumps. So with a little mix and match of OE parts the conversion would have been a breeze...

Here's a pic of the front. Needs smaller tires on the front and lowering. Gonna need a roof rack for the surfboard too. Just got to figure out how to pay for the thing.

Curt my surfboard has a cool story behind it. A frind worked at a bar in Baltimore and they would throw the empty beer cans down a hole in the floor. This guy had to clean the cans up on day and found the surfboard under the cans. It's an early 60's Hobie 10'2". The only place I have room for it is the hallway in my house. It still has the wax on it from the last time we took it to Daytona.

Dude! That car would look perfect under that board. You better get to the bank tomorrow a.m. before somebody else makes it theirs, as it sounds like others like it too! I like it ALOT!

Courtney I never knew that was your wagon. I LOVE THAT THING. I used to have a black 62 2dr. hardtop with red trim, and custom steel mopar wheels. Mine has factory P.S. which is power assist. I HIGHLY reccomend going all out oon the control valve unit. I screwed with my worn out one for a year. Finally i shelled out like 2 or 3 hundred bucks for a good rebuilt one. Worked like a dream. Napa stocked the tight little hoses back then. Makes a BIG difference.

I had a 460 in my Galaxie. I actually got the same mielage has my frind who had a 64 w/302. I have had a few 390s. I lovee em. Enough torque to move those beasts. I would buy it if i were u and the price was right.
