You dont see this setup very often. Is it because the 350 Cheby is so cheap and easy to get parts for or what. Any problems with mounting a 289? I have a nice 68 289 with a toploader and have been thinking of going that way instead of my 53 Merc flatty. What do you think?

I don't know of any drawbacks.A friend ran a 289 in his T coupe and it worked bitchin. A definite plus is it should have less heating issues than a sbc barring the engine is in good order. Not having 2 siamesed exhaust ports makes a difference.I think you can get a 3x2 intake for the 289 also. I ran a 289 in a 64 Comet for years, beat the hell outta it and never missed a beat. If you got it I would run it,hell at the least it has to be lighter than the flathead and the sbc. Larry

I think the biggest reason is size. Measure the difference between the front of the block to the fan on a 350 then on a 289. The 289/302 will eat up a lot more firewall than the small block.
My Dad had a 302 in his 29 Sedan. Carb ended up almost inside the cowl.

i've got a t on an a frame with a early 70s 302, the only problem i came across is how the filter comes out of the block and goes right into the frame. i did find a filter that took care of this, its real short but seems to work good. the napa # is 1056, purolator is L35310 its actually for a ridding mower but work really good in my situation but then again if you have the room on your firewall you could use a remote filter.

Hey, me and my pops put a 302 between my rails. So far everything worked out. When we bought it we thought it was a 68 29 but turned out to be a 69 302. We also got a toploader. Besides even driving my car, my dream is to put tri power on it when i get ALOT of money after its done.
Heres a pic of a guys 32 i met in Springfield he had a 302 in his, he was a really nice guy too.

My 29 hiboy has a 302. Only 21 years and over 100,000 miles and the damn thing needs to be rebuilt. Chalk me up as a satisfied customer.

The extra length is all water pump. If you get a short water pump from Ford Racing or Snow White Ltd (http://www.snowwhiteltd.com/)., a 289 is about the same length as a SBC. The common swap tricks to get a small block Ford to fit in an old Ford are:
- Rear sump or dual sump oil pan from a Bronco or Mustang
- Short water pump
- Short oil filter or "L" oil filter adapter
A 289 is 115 lbs lighter than a SBC, too...

I'm running a Mercury 289 in my '36. I've got a bitchen firewall and it's interesting to note that it is the same firewall for a Big Block chevy as a small block ford. I also am running the Bronco pan. I can fit a full size filter, but I would think a '36 frame is bigger than an A. A 3x2 intake must be rare, because I couldn't find one anywhere. I ended up just getting a new 4bbl.
If you have to run a 289,

I have a 289 in mine but I am not running a stock frame, mine is box tube. I run the short filter and I have a notch in the top of the frame that helps me change it. If you aren't going to run a hood it doesn't really matter if it is a little longer. Just adjust your wheelbase a little longer and it will ride a little better too.
Didn't Poteet put a 3X2 Setup on that Black 32 5 window that was in the latest Street Rodder?

Hey, thanks Walt for the links. This is my first Ford hot rod motor. I paid less than the cost of that intake for the Edelbrock intake and the Holley! Maybe I'll just save that mod for later, when I'm looking for things to change. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I put a 289/302 in two different model A's. My trick was to run no spacer for the fan. This allows you to put the engine up further saving room in the inside. Both used the stock four blade fan and water pump. Didn't need the Bronco pan as there usually is plenty of room up front. One had a stock front crossmember, the other was an aftermarket frame with a Heights front end. Engines were pretty low in the frame. If I remember correctly, didn't have to go more than five inches into the firewall.
Both engines were real good runners, one was a Boss 302 with a four speed.

This '29 roadster runs a Ford 460! The firewall was recessed between 4 and 6 inches (can't remember) and a small bulge had to be made in the hood for the exaust. Everything else fits. If you're gonna go Ford, go BIG!

In Australia, you probably see more SBF in A bones than Chevs as the Chevs were imported, but the fords were avaible in local cars, making them more accessible. I had a 29 whit a hot 302 in it. There is a company here that makes a plate that bolts onto where the water pump goes and you bolt a smaller( local holden 6 cylinder job) waterpump to the plate. This solves the WP length issue ( or you recess the firewal) the Oil filter problem can be solved with shorter filter as mentioned, which is what I ran- just changed the oil every 2500 mi. Or there are places that make a 90 degree adaptor so you can run the normal filter. Otherwise they fit no problem.
