It's 3a.m., Texas time...and no art show thread yet?! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here's a metal panel I did the other day. It's actually kind of a fade of 2 shades of red, but it's hard to tell in the pic.

Everything is OK here in Australia. Been a long week for me though and have been having comp problems. Have done a bit of new stuff this week. But haven't got a real lot of time at the moment so I will only post one image for now. Maybe more later in the week end! Geoff aka Whodaky http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v167/whodaky/FA149.jpg

I was waiting until Saturday, since I didn't want to be seen to be jumpin the gun.

One of our club members knocked this thing up. It's a stand for our hot dog boiler. Gas bottle sits at bottom, burner insside the box and the pot of water on top of the burner.

I figured it looked pretty ordinary just painted red, so took it home and added some lines. Kind of a rush job, but was good practice.

Since I ain't got a talented bone in my body as far as hand created art goes, I took some pics of the wheels out in the city cemetary.. Why? I was looking for some park to take pics of the leaves, but there are kids and stuff at parks, and I didn't want some dad opening up on me thinking I was some sort of perv... Plus, I didn't want any pics of modern cars in the shots, and you can't exactly drive right ONTO the park to get a decent shot around here.

http://www.whiteboard.net/~luke/54autumn/1.jpg

As for my 'art' shot:

3D photo of my car (http://www.whiteboard.net/~luke/54autumn/car_cemetary.jpg)

You gotta stare at the image crosseyed and make a 3rd image converge between the two. The middle image will be in 3D.

I take a lot of shots like this, because I can see them easily. Most people can't see them worth a damn though. Think 'ViewMaster' though.. I think it's kinda cool.

Those resin shifter knobs look like fun to make so I thought I'd take a stab at sculpting one. It's kind of crude since I've never done this before but I'm happy with it. I tried to make a 3-D version of the Honest Charley cartoon face. My wife thinks it looks like Rodney Dangerfield and it sorta does! This is the master and I don't know if I can cast from it or not but I'll try....
Honest Charley first.

Here are a few shots of my portfolio that I am reworking on the inside. I rescreened the outside to say what I wanted it to. I also screened the inside panels because they were white and needed something. The inside was gutted and custom fir with new sectioning in red. I kept some of the old bottles that contained the harmless chemicals and got rid of the acids and the radioactive particle. Yes I said radioactive! You could play with that kind of stuff in the 50's and it wouldn't hurt ya! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif Anyway I am reworking sone of the inserts that will go inside of the pockets so I can use this for a work portfolio instead of my graduating portfolio. Since this is the "Weekend Debacle" and not the Friday art show, I wanted to add one more shifter knob master I whipped out. The sketch shows the idea and I will probably cast two versions, one with the lettering and one without.
It fits my hand real well. The lighting makes it look yellow but it's really off white.

This blank came out of the discard bin at my local plastics house. I needed a design to cover the scratches. Not sure what I am going to put in the center.

Thanks Johnny, I had forgotten about Weird-Oh's, maybe they were from the same artist. Here's a scan of the drawing I got the idea from. As far as the medium, it's Sculpey straight from the box I got at Hobby Lobby. I've never done this stuff before so as far as technique goes- any smoothing (like to get rid of fingerprints) has been done rolling a toothpick across the surface.... This last one, I rolled up a ball of aluminum foil as a core so the clay wouldn't be so thick. I think it baked better. That's kind of like Tech! As close as I'll get this time anyways.

CougarDan.....here are a couple of things you might want to try if interested...btw, al.foil is a good old tried & true method for keeping a piece light and still building up a core mass without adding top heavy weight...also,that Sculpey ain't cheap!
If you are using the white sculpey, instead try Super Sculpey( the flesh colored stuff)....avoid Sculpey III as it will be too brittle for reworking or lasting strength....I have great luck with Super Sculpey and Premo.
The Premo will add color to the otherwise translucent features of the Super Sculpey, making it easier for you to see fingerprints and will allow light to hit your details better, making it easier for you to gauge proportions.
I blend 1 lb of SS to 2oz of Premo.....
I use Turpenoid for smoothing out all fingerprints and uneven textures....keep several acrylic brushes around just for this, this will refine a sculpt greatly and cut down on sanding time later....alcohol and brush works well too...
Turpenoid will also melt sculpey and makes a great flux that will adjoin the clay to itself better for strength and bond the clay to metal armatures and cores....
Hope this is of interest to you, I really enjoy your work...

James...that's not my point.
The art in question was lifted from work made by me and paid for by SkateFink....very generously,I might add.....
So you have two board members who worked together on this and here comes a STRANGER who seems all too happy to SHOW IT OFF on here.
As far as "tribute", who knows? I've never spoken to this guy, have you Pat?
I'm aware of Ed's body of work. I have to be.
Maybe I should be flattered by the rip-off artist who I just found out is selling switch plate covers with our art on them on ebay?

If you haven't talked to Neo, you don't know what his intentions for the board are. If the board is for his own use, I don't think it's that big of a deal...maybe not the most creative approach to something, though.

Yeah, sorry. I agree on his own use, I've seen lots of pinstripe designs on here that I love and might even copy on my car, (just learning to stripe) but selling on ebay or taking credit is different. Believe me, I know what it's like. I did a large mural in a restaurant and later my parents went and kinda asked about it (the manager had some cards and said he'd hand them out) the damn waiter told my parents he did it and even handed them his own bussiness card!! I guess he had bid on it, too and figured since he didn't get the job at least maybe he could get some follow up work.

.........another "As The HAMB Turns" story.....:

Once upon a time, a fat, balding 53 year old Skate Rat wants to try to recapture his fleeting youth. He thinks????What can I do? To fat for an affair....too poor for a Corvette to have an affair....too lazy to beg for an affair....EUREKA!!! I'll get a tattoo!! Now, he has been into skateboards since their inception. He has been into Rat Fink since HIS inception. He has been fortunate to get connected to THE Johnny Ace (otherwise known as the "Manic Hispanic") who worked his ass of at Roth Studios for 20 years. Johnny knows Finky personally. Who better to bring "Skate Fink" to life than Johnny?? A few e-mails and a couple bucks exchange hands and VOILA!! Not only the flash to do the tat, but an awesome color rendering to hang on the wall.
Well............flash art in hand, the fat Skate Rat heads to Mouse & Poncho's Peircing and Tattoos and talks Nate into slapping the art onto his arm. http://www.weirdtrip.com/DuBois/sk8rat.JPG
"SKATE FINK" comes to life!! Now that old, fat, balding Skate Rat has an alter-ego of his very own!! "Skate Fink!" Everywhere he goes, people stop him and want to talk about his new tat. Girls, guys (a few of them maybe gay, but who cares??), one young guy in a Chinese buffet tried to peel the rat off!
So from the humble collaboration of a couple burn-outs...one from MD and one from TX....the shot heard around the world. "Skate Fink" (desperately in need of a creative outlet) decided to see if he could paint his rendition of the design. About as soon as the paint dried, he posted a shot on the HAMB and then mailed it off to famous artist/tattoo artist/ hot rod builder from Deleware....DE George in an art exchange. George sent "Skate Fink" an awesome flaked, pinstriped, personalized skateboard that is a treasured addition to the "Pat Maphis Collection" TM JohnnyAceStudios 2004
While all of this was happening, who would have thought that half way around the world (and even in a different hemisphere!!) Neo Dutch would see said art and be so moved as to try his own rendition of this magical piece.
I sit here writing this with tears in my eyes. Who would have ever thought that the lagging ego of a old, fat, balding, burned out ex-skate rat could start such a world wide movement?
God Bless the HAMB!!!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif (and thanks again Johnny!)

.........here's the actual board. Pinstriped by "Unkl Ian," Joe Sulpy Sr. & Jr., Alan Johnson and a couple other guys at a panel jam at Sulpy's. The wheels are "Krypto-Hawaii" that I picked up at Town & Country surf shop in Honalulu. Without going out and checking, I think they are 70mm. The board is a limited production piece called a "60's Skate" Right around 48" The trucks are called "Megatron" They were an east coast rip-off of Trackers. The people putting them out gave me a pair to "test" just before they went into production. They turned out to be quite nice actually.....that was around 1976.
