Am digitizing some progress pics of my '57, wondering is it me or are there not that many '57 Effies out there? Seems difficult to me to find them for inspiration and ideas. Anyone have any pics or opinions of them?
Progress pics right comin' up.

They just aren't the darling of the F-Trucks. So you don't see too many. I saw one in Des Moines about 2 years ago, there were several thousand cars/trucks at the show.
Don't think I got a pic of it, but as I remember, it was slammed to the max, and had a major chop job. No angle chop like is popular these days, but the lines just don't lend to an angle chop.
if it don't make ya dirty it aint yours. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I know what you mean. Mine's a custom cab 'big window', the posts don't give one much to work with. But it looks fine un-chopped as it is. But it's kinda the boxy year-between in redesigning. And mine makes me plenty dirty.

Had thought I could magnify this well w/o it lookin' pixelated, but I guess not. This was the best shot that came out, wish the closer-up's came out better.
But it tells the situation well: since returning my friend's garage to him, I was working on the street, until a local black-and-white said neighbors were complaining, and don't I know I can't work on a vehicle on city of Eureka streets anyway.
So work's almost been at a stand still. But the neighbor (whose woodsy property it's in front of) graciously offered the space in front of his gate (his yard is packed as it is), things are looking way up. Sorry for the bad pic. More progress is being made with the disassembled bed 'n fenders in the garage (room only for our storage).

This has been the roof over its head, good 2X tarps, actually have gotten tighter than this with wrapping it up. In front is the EXP (POS) they warned me to get current tags or lose it. So I lost it. Troublesome weight I could never fix. The Kaiser is Kevin's (neighbor's) dad's. When the truck's painted 'n done we could have a decent car show going on the side o' Searles Rd.

Here's a closer shot of the Kaiser. The copper-oranger (or copper red?) metalflake job looks SO much better outside of this camera's lense.
Later paintstripped the back of the cab and the detail 'round the window & door sills. Previous owners simply primered over the old paint, so the original red was nearly tatooed to the metal. Thankfully, rust-free and rust-hole free 90% even metal met me on the other side of that old paint. Will have a better shot soon.

Got the bed off last month, paintstripping the box, minor fill work on the fenders. The fender bolts look welded in to the box, can't figure out how (if possible) to pry them out, as I've got a new set. Any ideas? Anyone had this same prob?

Damn thumb.
Corny as it sounds, it felt wonderful having all 3 of my gf's teens help me lift it off my truck. 'Twas no easy task. It seemed like the perfect Kodak moment, had we a 5th person to snap the shot. Bet their thumb would know better, too.

Most of the original boards were there, but until we resorted to a bolt cutter for the stubborn roundboldts-to-crossmembers, taking out some boards for access was key.
I have no idea how I'll put this thing back together again. assemble with new pine before I put the bed back on?
Hoping that's not a dumb question, but am new at this.

I've actually less kind things said than boxy about the Five Seven. But there are definate possabilities with that body. I think a mild section wouldn't hurt it at all. That'll make it look wider, but with that you will absolutly have to make a scrapper out of it.
You can do about a gazillion things with the grill and headlights, send me a straight front shot and at least one straight side and I'll slice and dice it for ya. Maybe that'll get the ol juices flowing.http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As a side project, I'm teaching my gf's son Abe (19) how to rebuild on a carb. We got a Holley 4165 off Ebay. Thanks again to Plan9 for his help from afar. This is the before shot. I have a Holley 2-Barrel, so this kinda a new step for me, too, but interesting teaching him (Luke, 15, helped me rebuild the 2 BBL).

Porknbeaner- to loose some of its boxiness, I took out the sidemirror posts (rectangular mirrors), smoothed over the post holes, got "mouse ear" chrom 'uns to attach to the top o' the door, also want to sell my stock front bumper, trying to find the right nerf bars to put up front, something to compliment the rolling pan and grill. I had thought of frenching the front signal lights, but they bolt on to a split-connection of the fenders and rolling pan.
Actually, the replacement fender (pass. side) needs to have the turn signal inserts from the old one cut 'n welded on.

heh heh But it helps so much to learn from fellow HAMB'ers. Some of those Searles Rd. shots I had to crop, just to keep the subject centered. Learnin'.

Put the bed on the chassis then put the wood in. Pine is a really bad choice, cypress or hardwood is your best bet.
The boards need a rabbit cut in them where the bed strips lie.
I really like cypress, but its gonna dent and gouge easy. Lotsa people use walnut or oak. Red oak is the cheapest, but white oak looks better. I'm using pecan in my F-Truck, I got a deal on it.
do yourself a favor, urethane both sides of it. Good marine grade urethane.

Got any pics of your ride?
The pine I got from Mar-K Products earlier this year. They're pre-cut for the bedlines, and feature "hidden mounts" for the roundboldts (basically the roundbolts won't show, for a smoother look). Luke's becoming quite the woodshop master @ Arcata High, he'll be prepping and staining the wood to match the paint-to-be (bed strips to be painted, too). Will definitely pass along the eurathane tip!
2 of the best original boards he'll be fabricating an overhead dash gauge, can't wait http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif The rest I'll save for a ceremonial fire in the fireplace when the truck's home, painted.

try loosing the front signals, and frenching a pair of '59 cad tail lights down low. You can get a pair with clear lenses from pete paulsen down in French Camp. Fill the roll pan/valance, or fab some oval push bars.

I dig yer ideas... and the local (the ONLY local) yard had a '59 Caddy last time I looked. I may save that idea for future ride, since this project has taken this long, and am trying not to get too more detailed. But dang, otherwise I'd be more into trying that idea. And I still might, actually. Thanks!

here's petes number, 209 983 0271. Its either paulsen motorsports or wheels by paulsen. If I recall he started over in Alemeda in the early 60s. But don't hold me to that, he did start somewhere over in the east bay in the early 60s.
here's some pics of the f truck. Its farther along than these but i don't have any recent pics.

Nice links, guys- Lowlife the '57 on their site is wicked, can't figure out if they channeled or what, it's like an invisible chop somewhere to keep it that low. Nice tailgate too (she said). The color of the '37 (project 1) is gorgeous, like a dripping black cherry-meets burgundy paint. That's the kind of burgundy I dream of for my truck. Purple, you'd really dig it.
