After reading about the investigation of Boyd's shop by the Feds, I'm a little concerned that it may become harder to title and register newly built hot rods, so I'd like to get the paperwork out of the way.

I have been gathering parts for a 1932 pickup and am closer to starting the actual build. I am using all old Ford parts with the exception of the FRAME, which I bought new from a guy in MA that was retiring and closing his rod shop.

I have no title and no VIN, etc.

I used one of the retitle services for my '61 Falcon when I ran into a title snafu, so I'm familiar with that process, but without an original frame, VIN or title, I'm not sure where to get started on this new truck project.

What should I do to get started?

For the completely legal way to register a hot rod in PA, check out this form:
http://www.dot3.state.pa.us/pdotforms/mv_forms/mv-426B.pdf

You fill it out, include receipts for sales tax, a few pictures, and a state inspection. The state will issue you a title, but it will be a "Specialty Constructed" title, if that matters.

You won't be able to get antique plates, and in Pittsburgh or Philadelphia you'll want to apply for the 5,000 mile emissions exemption.

That's all there is to it, and it's not only fully legal, it's also cheaper than a title service.
