on my '51 chev (216 ci) i have the problem of the engine 'loading up' after driving for some length, you really smell gas inside and then it tends to fade (and the idle is slightly rougher as if the plugs are fouling), but last night after driving home from a local cruise night, I smelled like gas! i realize this could just be a general carb problem, but it may not be.
is my solution something as simple as leaning out the carb or replacing the air filter, or is there something that i don't know about these specific engines?
please help, my garage smells like gas and so do i, and even a greasy gearhead like me is annoyed by it now...

Sounds like you are ready for a carb rebuild to me. I'm guessing that you've already checked all the lines and fittings for leaks.

Tred...
My car was doing this with the old engine (same one you have) before I rebuilt the carb also...
Get a kit, (about $10) and take that sucker apart, clean the crap outta it and don't forget to put ALL the new stuff in...
It should solve your problem...
I'm happy to help if you wanna drive down to the garage.

any auto value will have the kit. thats where i got mine from. if there books dont go back to 51 the kit for the 61 235 carb will be the same as your stock carb. better fix it soo. i had dual carbs on my 235 and one of them was flooding out and it locked up the bearings from gas washing the oil. o yea with the 61 carb u will have a few xtra parts dont worry.

I got my rebuild kit for the carb on my '53 at NAPA for $11.00. Their website lists it for $16.

What is the carb on yours? Mine was a Rochester single-barrel carb.. I got the kit from Mobile parts king, I'm pretty sure it was about $10 but I may have confused it with my scooter carb kit....
I was definitely less than $20 but I think 10 was about right...

Tred you should have a Rochester model B on your 216, the 235 carb is almost the same but the venturi size is a little bigger. The kit does either carb and you should be able to find it locally for cheep. Also check your oil for fuel in it, if the fuel pump is bad it will leak fuel into your crankcase and not pump enough gas into the carb which coud cause stumbling at certain speeds. Also check that someone did not put a later 235 carb on your car.

no stumbling at any speed, just the annoying smell of gas always on me, and the oil looks okay.
thank you all for your help with this matter.
