View Full Version : Old School Throttle Linkage -- Pic, Question

I finished up my throttle linkage today, combined the mounts off a '38, and the arm and spoon off a '33. Everything works great, but since the linkage arm travels through an arc, the shaft thru the firewall requires a slot that enables it to move back and forth -- and up and down -- unhindered. Anyone seen a grommet, or some other method for sealing up this hole? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Best way to seal is to use rubber with a razor slit cut in it that will seal around the rod as it moves. Old inner tube will work.

Looks nice! What are those bases for the pivots?
For a seal I would use a piece of rubber with a slit, or one of those furry seals (I can picture it but can't think of where from).

There was a thread a while back by C9 on this. He has a slick solution to this ... a captured disk that allows for a seal and the movement.
Try this ... Throttle Seal (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB1&Number=420560&Forum=U BB1&Words=throttle&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Searchpag e=0&Limit=25&Old=6months&Main=420554&Search=true#P ost420560)

Hey Laverda -- EXACTLY the sort of thing I was looking for... I missed Jay's original post, but I shoulda known he'd have a good solution...
Nimrod -- the two rings and bell-type mounts are stock '38 Ford. Earllier Ford linkage had just one of these ring + bell mounts.

Anyone save a link to Jay's post on the linkage seal? Is it maybe in Tech o matic?

bellows boot with a aluminum ring riveted to the outside of the firewall would look great. i think im going to use that idea on mine http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

lowsquire, you must have a hell of a coil to get the spark to jump to those plugs..... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
I like that ride!
