Every week we tell you guys Model As never had a VIN. The serial number is approximately under the drivers doorpost or cowl.

Canadian built model "A's" often had the serial number stamped on the left side of the frame just FORWARD of the cowl. Many of them had a notch cut in the fender to expose the number.

Until '31 the serial numbers started with the letter "A" (or "AA" if it was a truck). The serial number assigned to each "A" was taken off the number stamped on the side of the engine. ALL engines were built in Dearborn at the River Rouge plant (until late 1931) and shipped to the different assembley plants around the world.

The Canadian "A's" would often have the letter "C" in front of the "A" (or "AA")

ALL serial numbers (world wide) had a "STAR" (five pointed) in FRONT of AND AFTER the serial number.

For example, a Canadian serial number could be - (STAR) CA43569 (STAR)

This number should NOT be confused with the "SIL NUMBER". The SIL number was usually stamped on the body subframe rail that the front seats were bolted to.

North American SERIAL and SIL numbers were usually on the left side of the frame and the body; UK and Austrailian SERIAL and SIL number often would be on the right side of the car.

SIL numbers started with a letter; mine has the letter "T" meaning it (the body) was built in Toronto. The rest of the SIL number only indicates the date the body was assembled. Which means there could be more than one Tudor (55A Type) that have the same SIL number as mine. There are are NO stars before or after SIL numbers.

Sprout, if yours is an American "A", the serial number could be UNDER the left "foot" (the part that supports the cowl and the fuel tank) on TOP of the frame rail.

If the car sat out in the rain for a few years, the serial number would rust over. With the cowl removed, gently sand the TOP of the frame rail just behind the most forward cowl mounting bolt. If the number has been stamped on the frame, it should show up.

Now if the frame isn't the original; (i.e. an aftermarket frame or modified) and you don't have an engine (4 banger "A") in it, then your "out of luck." (no serial)
