This is likely a little off topic.

I need advice on building up my 292 engine. I have read Santucci's 6 cyinder power manual several times, but he's a little vague in a street, hi-torque buildup like my 1 ton pickup needs.

I already have a set of headers and an HEI for it.

I'm going to use Propane pistons to get the compression up to 9 to 1 or so. And, I'll use a 4 bbl intake with a little 4 bbl carb.

What pointers can you guys give me? Cam selection? Poor man's headwork? Tips to make a smooth driver out of it?

I can't really get into lump port heads and big oversize valves and seats and stuff. Basically, I can afford a simple rebuild with some neat parts along the way.

I appreciate any input fellows.

For the street, keep the cam kinda small, unless you have a good converter or have deep gears. Assuming you're running a slushbox. If you're running a stick, be a bad dog... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What kinda car, gears, tranny, etc. That'll help to get ya some specific advise.

Glad to see ya wanna build a six. The world needs more people like you. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ok, I see it's a one ton now, so what year, weight, etc. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif It's been a 6 or more beer night...

I like to see sixes run. I ran a 250 cheby six in a vintage dirt coupe a few years ago and had a ball with it. It was a stock 250 with a cam headers and 4bl intake with a 500 holley thats it. That thing was killing small blocks. Good luck and have some fun

Call Tom Langdon, 586-739-9601. He's a retired GM driveline engineer, and past president of Inliners. Give him as much specific info about your project - weight, use, gearing - and he can supply you with a cam and other engine parts.

If anyone has a copy of the "Gasser Wars" book, there is a picture of Tom near the front of the book driving his gasser, The Hole Shot 6. Used to run a Poncho OHC 6 in it.

It will be a 1 ton dually with 4:11 gears and 31 inch tall dually tires. Turbo 400 transmission.

I'm actually pulling the 454 out of this thing to go 6 cylinder. 454 needs help and the mileage isn't worth the power that I don't ever need. I'm hoping to improve the mileage at least 2 or 3 mpg over what I'm getting now.

This engine came out of my father-in-law's C60 dump truck, which he used to haul dirt AND pull a backhoe. He assures me the little engine didn't really strain too badly under even that load.

I'm hoping the headers, HEI, and better intake/ carb will improve the mileage and power over what it had stock in the dumptruck.

Most likely the 6 will eat more fuel than the big block in town, mayb even with the big block on the highway

You really think an efficient 292 cubic inch engine will get comparable mileage to a 454?

I know that stock 292's are known for poor economy.

I believe that as long as I keep the carb, cam, and exhaust mild, the engine should be more efficient than stock.

I mean, it's a 292 cubic inch engine.

Hey-I want to get rid of my 235 inline and go up to a 454-wanna trade? I'm totally serious-pm me and we could work this out. It has 70k original-3sp trans, leaky mainseal, but we can replace that when we pull it out http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sorry dude, I have given away every 235 I've ever had.

The 194, 230,250, 292 type of engines is way removed from the 235 type of engine.

Besides, have you priced a 454 lately? A core is worth pretty big coin.

Sorry to Hijack. But are a Chevy 250 and a pontiac 250 close to the same?
