So is there a different cover/gasket for earlier B/RB motors versus later ones? Did the change come about with the 440 release? Hopefully Sunday afternoon I'll be reciving a 440 outta a '73 Coronet and had heard that later ones had a different covers. I would like my car to be pretty correct for a '62 Super stocker is why I ask.

They changed the number of bolts in the early 60's, I can't remember exactly when, but is was when they went from removeable rocker shaft stands to fixed ones. ( I think) All the old 350/361/Early 383RB had these removeable stands, kinda like the Ford FE engines with the low/medium/high riser heads.
I hope this helps some.

Pretty sure the change came in '63. The earlier ones had 4 bolts, the later ones had 6.

Well, it wasn't '63 as I have two and they both have 4 bolt valvecovers. The later 6 bolt covers will work on the early models and, probably, vice versa. However, the 6 bolt units are MUCH easier to get to seal. Did I say MUCH? The old 4 bolters were, and are, a pain in the ass to get to seal!!!

I have 383 valve covers on my 400. Just 2 empty bolt holes on each head. They probably added the extra hole to keep the tin ones from leaking. Mine are old no name fins from an old dragster with too many breathers.
