floyd the oldtimer showed up today with a question.he's got a trans called "X-shift" it has chevy internals, with aluminum adaptor plates front and back to fit a flattie.he wants to know, does a chevy clutch disc work with a ford pressure plate, and does the pilot bearing (or bushing) have a different diameter? i told him i need to do some measurements, but i don't see why not.he also mentioned that that the X-shift had a finer spline on the input shaft than the ford, where i always thought they both had 10 spline, with slightly different diameters http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif anyone ever seen one of these trans before? he's got a ford '38-9 trans right now,but it's popping out of gear and needs rebuilt.thanks in advance-george

number of splines ,coarser or fine are easy to determine, the shaft size ,measure it , the bushing or bearing you can measure get the in side and outside dimension,as far as the chevy disc or ford , as long as it clears the flywhell when bolted up., the cushion springs ,wont hit , or use a diaphragm cluth much
narrower, all these things can be covered and figured out what is needed to
,and go off to the parts store and have them look in the books, all those items are listed by size and dimension

I have seen an article on a trans that sounds like that in a Hot Rod annual from the sixties. I'll dig around at home and see if I can find it.

I found the article. It was just a mention in a general article on transmissions, but it didn't really say much ...

- They were originally made for drag racing in 55 or later Chevs but you could also get flathead adaptors for them.
- They use a earlier Chev pickup top-shifter setup.
- They were distributed by Offenhauser, but not made by them.

thanks simon, good to know it can be made to work.i think i'll just have to do some measuring and parts scrounging to make it work like oldchevyseller said-george
