My wife and I would like to get away for some much needed R&R. Probably around the 3rd week in Nov. Where in SC is a good place to go? She said she'd like a place on the beach and within walking distance of things to do (so we don't have to rent a car all the time we're there).
We're far from wealthy so not some ritzy place with a golf course.
Also, is Nov. going to be too late in the year to enjoy the beach?
Maybe we could meet up with some HAMBers some night for dinner.

the wife and i are headed to charleston for our anniversary halloween weekend. we found a place a few miles from downtown thats only 50 buck a night. think it's a days inn but i'm not sure. that was pretty cheap for around there. there's lots of great places on the coast here. are you stuck on SC. there's probably more places in NC as far as coastal. if you've never been to the Outer Banks of nc then you should consider that. nov is a good time because seasonal rates have changed by then and it's less busy. thats where we got married 3 years ago and stayed in a nice holiday inn with oceanfront room for around 100 a night. wilmington is a cool place to visit to. i lived there for a while and we still go to visit often. the best place to stay in wilm to me is the Amerihost in in monkey junction. a coupla miles from the beach but you can get a jacuzzi room(nice one) for 100 a night. anything at the beach will 200plus. there's lots of great places and i could go on. if you'd like to discuss some more feel free to pm me your # and i'll give you a call a guide you to some good places. i know all the good places to eat and stuff in all the above except charleston which i will know before you go. how long of a trip are you making? you can easily do the nc mountains and coast in a few days with an econo unlimited mileage rental. the nc mountains in the fall are great and i'm not just saying that because i live here. avoid myrtle beach i've been 6 times and have enjoyed myself 1 maybe...ken....

Charleston, Hilton head is spread out, and they charge a "toll" to get into certain neighborhoods. It's all golf.

Its the off season, so Myrtle Beach is inexpensive. Also, if you can stand the sales pitch, contact the time shares for a "free weekend" offer

Donzie,

Just curious, how are you planning to get to SC? Fly, drive? You mentioned not wanting to have to rent a car for the whole time you're there, but there's really no place that I know of, that you can "walk" to attractions and so forth (most are pretty spread out). I guess it depends what type of vacations/attractions you're after.

I've never been to the SC coast in November, but I do know that it's too cold in NC. We spent a week on the Outer Banks one October, and felt like we had the whole island to ourselves. There's not much to do there but relax... the beach was great for walking, but not "hanging out" (too windy and cold). Rent a small cottage or condo with a hot tub and fireplace and forget about attractions.

Someone mentioned Charleston, and that would be a cool coastal town to visit in November. You may be able to find a deal on something near the Market, which would give you tons of options for walking to places. We went there for a long New Years Eve weekend, and didn't use the car for 3-4 days. Tons of places to eat and drink, cool architecture to check out, and Battery Park (and atleast one other) overlook the ocean (kinda meets that beach criteria).

Also, before you rule out Myrtle Beach, there is a layed-back area due south, called Garden City. Beautiful beaches without all the glitz of Myrtle Beach proper. You can probably get a killer deal on a cottage one row back from the ocean and directly on Murrel's Inlet. There is a small aiport at MB... pretty sure there are connecting flights there from Raleigh-Durham, but maybe even from other hubs.

Again, not sure how you'd really "get around" any of these places without a car. Someone else mentioned the NC mountains as an R&R destination, and I would recommend that 100%!!! Feel free to drop a note if you have questions or want other suggestions (beach or mountains).

Charleston is a great place,I was in the navy there & stayed for awhile when i got out.Theres really alot of things to do just by walking, Check into the $50 motel, thats a deal.
Also theres Isle of palms outside of charleston which is a great beach area.
I think the other beach was Folly beach.
Nice area down there, people are freindly & foods good.
Myrtle beach is also nice, but more of a resort place.
weather should be pretty good about then still.

Not to dis So. Carolina, but I'd go to St. Augustine, Fla., for mid-November. Warmer weather, and some great walking around areas in the historical districts.

October is better for the Carolinas.

Thanks guys...but it seems she has decided on a cruise! We'd like some warmer weather (remember, we're in Michigan) and a relaxing atmosphere. Problem is because of my music schedule, Nov. is about the only time we have.
Hey, Ryan should put together a HAMB cruise sometime. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks again for all the info. I'd still like to do NC or SC sometime, sounds like some great vacation spots.
