Ok guys, I'm going to a swapmeet this weekend and one of the things I'll be looking for is an aluminum dual carb intake for my 1947 flathead. Is there an easy way to tell whether the intake in question will fit? What are the differences between '32-'48 and '49-'53 intakes?
Thanks in advance.

If it has two large holes (breather and oil fill) near the front, it's late model 49-53. If no holes its early. But there are some differences in the early years too, regarding generator mount area. I believe the earlier up to 42? had the single stud mount and the post war early had the two bolt holes?

Thanks alchemy, will the late style still bolt up to an early block?

Yes, and you can just put frost plugs in the extra holes.

Also, the '49-'53 has a single stud generator mount, a little further forward. I believe that any year manifold will bolt to any year block except V8 60Hp of course. The vent placement and generator mount style will be different depending on year. I'm running a Fenton two-two 59AB ('45-'48) style aluminum manifold on an 8BA block ('49-'53). I had to make an adapter to fit the 8BA style alternator bracket (slingshot type, new aftermarket stuff) but other than that everything works fine. The 8BA block uses fewer bolt holes for the manifold than the eariler blocks but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Flathead? That's an Indian tribe, right? Style of haircut? Herman Munster; yea, that's it.

also...if it has two round holes in the top, its a single-two manifold. If it has four, its a two-two intake. but watch out, if there are six holes, thats a 3x2 manifold. hope that helps http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

And 8 holes??. 2 -4's??. 4 -2's??. 4 holes could be 2 carbs or one, depending on the spacing. good luck hunting. buy all you can find and sort out later.
