I have XM in my Caprice wagon, my house, my work, my garage and my wife's Honda. I know Stern is not XM, but, they do have opie & anthony and it's only 9.99/mo. The roady 2 is reasonable (you can pick up an original roady for less than $100), it has an FM modulator built in (tune the radio and turn it on) and is pretty small. I have XM and really like it. Look at the available hardware(tuners), channels, program and features. No matter which one you choose, you will never go back to FM.

I have Sirrius in my daily, I hope to put it in my Pontiac, but I'm not sure what to do with the attenna. I think it'd look dumb stuck on the car, but not sure how to hide it and still get a clear signal, maybe in the package tray?

The one I got with the new plugnplay is about the size of a Zippo lighter

my dad has sirius, and has a receiver that can beportable if you buy the car rig to plug it in. when in a car it broadcasts at 88.1-88.7 (to avoid interference from radio stations in that range) depending on which you select, and your radio picks it up when tuned to that channel. the thing fuckin rocks. not sure what music choices xm has, but there are quite a few channels that play 90s music (my generation's oldies), bluegrass and "outlaw country (GOOD stuff by the way)" and an endless assortment of older rock and roll, not to mention a few rap channels and an un-edited comedy channel, which fucking rocks.

I recently rented a Mustang from Hertz that had Sirius radio. Turns out there is an all Elvis station on Sirius. Couple this with Stern, and it'll be a must have.

Got Sirius in my pickup for the drive up to Paso this past May. For the most part I really dig it, except lately, they are adding DJ's. Still no commercials, but the "Rig Rockers" (Outlaw Country) mindless babble and corney bravado is getting annoying. Still better than broadcast, but this guys an ASS....

As far as putting it an older car, I plan on putting the antenna on the package shelf and using vinyl paint to match the interior, I'll let you know if it works,

I've used both at one time or another, and as someone with somewhat discriminating musical tastes, I'd get XM hands down. We had Sirius with our Dish Network at my old house and I really disagreed with some of the classifications for the channels. As far as I'm concerned, the Doors are NOT a "Jam Band."
However on XM, there are about 7 or so country stations and the only one that sucks is the one that plays new stuff.
Just my preference.

I think Siri has 3 satellites up and Xm has 2.
You can listen to Sirius music channels on your computer
for free if you are a radio subscriber.

Xm charges extra for that and some other programs like Opie&Andy.

Sirius will also start broadcasting video next year.
As far as coverage Sirius is very good, but I haven't listened to
Xm to see if there is a difference.

They both have pretty good websites, check them out.

OK, this thread had a year to cook. Which is better today? We listened to XM on the way to MOKAN. I wish they had a surf station. Also, someone said XM has rockabilly, we never found it?

well xm lost nascar in 2007 ,so if you want to listen ot it gotta move to sirius, as far as surfing music, the problem with knowing what is gonna be on is you end up on the web sites looking at programming,
hav had xm since it first came out,and gonna have to change when the races are covered on sirius,

Take it from this old rock and roll DJ, from back in the day when AM radio ruled, Sirius definately has better programming. They just announced a new channel lineup today. Check it out at their website, sirius.com

Not only do they have Mojo Nixon on Outlaw Country, Howierd Stern is coming.

XM has a station called FUNGUS 53
Typical stuff you hear are
Dead Kennedys
Dropkick Murphys
Ramones
Green Day
Fugazi
The Aquabats
AFI
The Misfits
Pennywise
The Dickies
Go Betty Go
The Dead Milkmen
NOFX

Some of the weekley shows are
Rancid Radio- two hours hosted by a couple members of Rancid
Hee Haw Hell- Psychobill, Rockabilly, Cow-Punk
Kowabunga Uber Alles- Surf music
Skanorreha- All Ska, two-tone, thrid wave, everything

I currently have XM and will keep it for the music but I'll get Sirius before Stern is on the air. Both is the way to go for now. It's like VHS and Beta one will win out in the end and it may not be the best one.

Sirius is the one to get. They have satellites that cross over the US and XM is southbound around the equator and the signal is tougher to get. I have the Xact plug and play that I run thru the FM modulator and it rocks. We drove to Bonneville and back and it is tough to listen to local radio. Also, sirius has NPR on it. Oh, and the FM modulator thing works in my building behind the shop and I can pick up the FM signal on the portable radio in the shop.

ive had sirius for quite awhile. i like all the choices but i hate the dj's. i would almost rather listen to commericials than their bullshit little stories and i really hate it when they talk over the music right up to just a split second before the singing starts. i was hoping for music only, no such luck.commercial free isnt quite true because they are always advertising the other stations on their network. i find myself switching back and forth between them and local am and fm stations all the time.

XM has more channels than Sirius as well as more suscribers. Xm no longer charges extra to listen on your PC. Negotiations are underway to merge the 2 companies. The content of both is great. The quality of both is lacking. The digital algorythms used create a lot of artifacts in the sound. They aren't cd or even FM quality but they do sound better than AM. I dig the blues, jazz and old radio shows. When a lot of that stuff was recorded it sounded rough anyway.

I've had XM almost since it was first started, maybe 3 years or so? I love it. I have the old Sony plugnplay unit. Plug it in my car, the wife's car, the house. I use the cheapo tape player adapter but it actually works good.

By the way, both Sirius and XM have NPR. I think that might be mandated by the FCC anyway.

I think XM has the advantage because there is such a big subscriber base. It's in a ton of GM cars and some other makes. Stern is the big thing Sirius has. I don't dislike him, but I don't really love him either. But, I know he's really helping their business grow.

I have the XM antenna on the package shelf in my little Saturn. Works good. I don't want it outside the car. But you can have problems depending on the angle of the glass. You really need "line of sight to the sky." More vertical glass in an old ride may give you some issues.

I don't get the sports part. I can listen to football or maybe baseball on the radio. Basketball even or hockey. But what the hell are you listening to with the NASCAR thing? That makes no sense. It's bad enough to watch let alone listen to. I don't know how to say this politely, but if you find that shit entertaining you must be retarded. The sound of cars continually turning left, with play-by-play, isn't enough to keep a dog entertained.

I gotta check out that Fungus channel. I usually listen to XMU, the Rhyme, NPR, Hank's Place, Headline News...

XM has an 80's metal station, I guess. I don't subscribe because I bet I already own most of it on CD and it is already in my changer in the garage!

I would like to hear "the boneyard" on Sunday nights though.

XM is the company to go with, Sirius is blowing all there money on these gimmick "celebrities" like Martha stewart, eminem,Richard Simmons, etc etc.. so cares, its the programing that counts.
For instance, Sirius mixes Punk rock,Metal and Rap on 1 channel! bleh!

And then you have your "im getting Sirius for howard stern".... Lets face it guys, its not 1990 anymore, the guy is way past his prime, he has nothing new to offer, just that slit cackeling in the dunktank who MUST agree with every word he says. the guy is a complete liar too, the other day on his show he claimed that sirius has over 3 million subscribers, when the fact is they only have around 1.5. (XM has over 4 million subs.) Sirius has 3 satelites vs 2 however XM signal is stronger.

I highly suggest you go to both websites, and get the 3 day free online trial, you will see Xm is superior. And be sure to check out Opie and Anthony on XM 202. These guys are really great and they uncover all the lies and how many people Stern has screwed in the past. The show is fresh, a breath of fresh air, and they are regular guys who do not spout off about only themselves, how they invented everything in radio, etc etc....

sirius thinks that howard stern is there "savior" and will somehow "save" the company to get them to make some positive numbers becuase right now they are loosing mega amounts of money, When the fact his that his ratings have been diving for over 5 years! look at certain market numbers,.. Orlando for instance, i think stern is like what #9 or somthing like that?

Another point is the equipment, XM has way better radios!, Sirius doesnt even have a portable unit that can recieve live radio!, its more like a recording device. you cant walk around town with it and listen like like you can with the XM2go units.

XM's channel 14 = Bluegrass Jct is the best thing I've ever heard on radio of any kind. No chit chat and some very obscure 'grass plus the best New Grass music.

Now please discuss the various equipment options. Personally, I don't want anything that looks new to be visable. I also want to patronize a HAMBer's business if possible. Car audio guys, step up here.

64Belaire, do you listen to O&A byany chance? The "cackeling slit" comment is a dead giveaway. I agree though, sirius is the betamax of satellite radio. That company is hemoraging cash at an astounding rate, they have 2 or 3 gay channels (not that there's anything wrong with that), the "portable" units are gigantic compared to XM's stuff, Stern is old and done, too many DJ's. XM has a surf show on fridays on 53 and another one on saturday on 6, a very good rockabilly show on fridays on 5, outlaw country, their DJ's know when to shut-up, O&A, america right, online listening is free. My only peeves are to much friggin sports!!! They dropped the heavy metal channel (speed and death metal), special X (general wierd and disturbing music), and on the rocks (lounge music) for the dumb jocks. I'd gladly get rid of the sports to bring back those three.

It's just a magnet that you can place on the out side of your car. like i said five seconds and it's gone. and then when you ready to go place it back on your car connect it to the reciever and power it up and your rockin....

The antennas are now tiny, and forgiving for placement and good reception. On my driver(not that this would help on a rod, but show you how forgiving they are)I hid the antenna inside the third brake light housing on the rear package tray. It shoots thru the plastis housing, and the tinted rear window. You can experiment with the antenna in different places before you commit to mounting it, but it does not have to be totally exposed to work well

am i the only one who ever thought Stern was never funny? his comedy is lackluster and plays to the andrew dice clay crowd, to me anyways. if you ever catch him on tv his show is always just some freak show. which i guess if youre into freaks, its wonderful. Stern strikes me as the creepy uncle who used to stare at your sister after a few beers. juvenile male-based humor has its place, and i did love the "Man Show", but damn, how many times can you ask to see a gals knockers? Especially when everybody knows she has them because they can rent her pornos anytime. just plain dumb.

after review it sounds like XM has the stuff. if i can ever get myself to pay for something i used to get for free somewheres maybe ill jump in.

XM Satellite Radio offers a discount on select satellite radio services. To order, go to http://xmradio.com/friends (https://xmradio.metrononline.com/xmpromotion/emaillogin.aspx) and enter access code Kevin.Green@xmradio.com. To learn more about XM Satellite Radio, go to www.xmradio.com/learn/index.jsp (http://www.xmradio.com/learn/index.jsp).

I hope it works for you. if not we might have to strike a deal to get them.

For the record I think Howard's show is great and I will get Sirius just for it. If one third of Howard's audience signs up then sirius it will blow XM away for the number of subscribers.

I also love Nascar. I used to watch each race, now I can work in the garage and not feel as though I am missing something.

I was a die hard stern Listner since the first day he came to LA 10 + years and used to catch his channel 9 show, on sattelite TV at a friends house....Well I got XM and will never ever consider paying Sirius to listen to Stern so he can tell me how great he is again..And Stern is also bringing commercials along with him. Just think Sirius must make 220 million dollars for the next 7 years just to pay Stern. Besides Artie Lange will be departing Stern soon. Howard proved also today on his radio show what a hypocrite he is by hiring bubba the love sponge someone in the past he has said he knows nothing about, just that he is a Stern rip off....Howards done....
