I've never been on his site, but in doing so research today I ran across it, and I really enjoyed reading a lot of the comments.
But the reason for posting this, I got an email this morning from Robbie Radcliffe aka: chopt50 out of Temecula, CA with an email address of chopt50@msn.com.
This is the email he sent to me, keep in mind, I don't know this kid, but I've got a feeling some of you might.
He Writes:
"Those RAT ROD emblems are fucking GAY!!!! It's homos like you that fead fuel to the fire of this "rat rod" shit car craze. Don't encourage people to build crappy hunk of shit cars"
Another reply:
"I am not the only one that thinks those "rat rod" logo things are stupid. I, as well as many others on the HAMB, think that your rat rod logos are exremely fucking stupid, and I have no problem voicing my opinion."
Another reply:
I was not the only one making fun of them on the HAMB.

Now I realize that “Rat Rod” is for the most part a new term use today, in the late 60’s if you had a “Traditional Rod” we called them “School Boy Rods” because we really couldn’t afford much, I had a ’31 Ford roadster, and paid $75.- for it, a buddy of mine had ’32 Ford 3 window and I think he paid around $200. for it, he had to put it on a layaway plan and pay so much a week. Anyway we used to get made fun of a lot by the other kids, they my will have been old run down jalopies, but we spent many a nights cruizin’ around town and having a ton of fun, oh, and we had the old Mexican blanket for seat cover back then too. Now 40 some years later I’m having to defend myself all over again because I’m choosing to use the terminology “Rat Rod” keeping my ’50 Ford Tudor in black primer, wide whites, red rims, & lake pipes, what gives? When I first heard the term “Rat Rod”, Ed Roth & the Rat Fink came to mind, because I thought it was something he would have came up with.
Sorry to have rambled on like that, I just wanted to get this of off my chest, I can’t believe someone would out of the blue insult me like that, and use some of the member on this website to back him up, when no one knows who I am or what I’m about.

Welcome CJ. Well........we're off to a good start! I thought the "RatRod" thingie was pretty cool I was going to order a set to put on my PT Cruiser with wide whites just to REALLY piss these guys off.......but then I stopped and asked myself, "Hmmmmmmm, what would "ScaryLarry" do??????"........and thought, naw, I better not.

As one of the original MAMMA's (Maryland Automotive Modlers Association) Boyz, I can fully appreciate your talent and contribution to the hobby. Just attended a meeting a couple months ago to send Larry Boothe off to TX.
The "RatRod" stickers are percieved here in much the same manner that the chrome "Street Rod" emblems would be by a bunch of gold chainer snobs at an NSRA meet.
I CAN say that I don't think that Ryan Cochran (owner, creator and moderator of this site) will be too happy with some dumbass going out and representing the HAMB in such a manner. If Ryan has issues with you or your product......HE will let you know.

Personally I don't see my A coupe a rat rod, it may have black primer because I can't paint for shit and I refuse to pay out the nose for someone to put on a decent paint job, the rest of the car is as good as all the billet laden street rods in terms of construction, I worked hard on it and I do get insulted if some one calls it a rat rod. I know I drove close to 8 thousand miles this year in it and it never left me stranded or complained. As far as the sticker goes, if someone wants to refer to thier work as ratty or shitty for that matter that's their business, just don't label mine and expect to walk away unaffected. I might as well jump in. I don't like rat rods. I'm a young guy, but I strive to have the nicest car I can.

I see lots of guys in thier 50's with their "rat rods" like they had or wanted when they were younger. I would think that now that they are older and have the money to get what they always wanted, they would want a super nice car and be able to afford it.

All I did was email you on my thoughts, which I obviously let get out of hand. There are a lot of you that just totally missed what I posted and why I posted it, or maybe not, judging by some of your comments. This kid was way out of line, 1; for projecting his opinion on me when I didn’t ask nor wanted it and 2; using this media the H.A.M.B. website, meaning you the participants to back up his opinion. It’s a total lack of respect and if we condone this type of behavior as a society we’ve got bigger issues to deal with then what we call or hot rods.
It’s really to bad that some people are so closed minded with these works of art and what they may or may not refer to them as, ie; Rat Rod, Hot Rod, Lead Sleds, Shoeboxes, School Boy Rods, Traditional Rods etc. etc. etc.
I’m a very judge mental person, (that’s what my wife says anyway) but when it come to a persons work of art, something they have created with there own two hands like “customizing” a rod or sled, I keep my opinions to myself, as they say “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and who am I too mess with that.
I’m choosing to drive my car when I’m finished with her, not trailer her, park her in a crowded parking lot, leave her sit out in the rain, and take her to a car show with out spending a week to get her ready for the show, and basically have fun cruising, listing to my doo wop as I motor down the road, unlike a ’57 Chevy I spent 3 hard years restoring in the early ‘80’s, I was scared to death to drive it.
I’m also choosing to leave her in black primer, with the seats covered in Mexican blankets and decked out with skulls, and yes using the terminology “Rat Rod” and that’s my prerogative, so I guess if that makes me a homo or queer then so be it, but please… someone needs to brake it to my wife, I don't think she knows it.
In closing I guess you can’t always teach an old dog new tricks, in my day I was a stone cold hell raiser, but I knew that, I spoke when spoken to, I respected other peoples privacy, and if I didn’t have something positive or nice to say I kept my mouth shut.

It doesn't matter what phrase it is, people hate the phrase becuz it makes you part of the latest "trend". And rat rods are the latest "trend". Just becuz someone labels a car as a rat rod doesn't automatically make it some dangerous POS. Look at Sams "Roach Rod" (tm). Its about as cool a rod as can be built. Yet if StreetRodder snapped a shot of it at a show or run, it would w/o a doubt be labeled as a rat rod in their article.

Personally, anyone who gets so worked up about 2 little words needs to see a shrink. Build what you like, let others call it what they want. An unsafe rod it a shit box on wheels no matter what the owner calls it.
