The 56 which will be called "Project Grocery Getter" has the original housing under it with no guts, axles or backing plates.
Should I use the Camaro substitute or try and find all the missing pieces for it?

I see alot of Camaro rearends on ebay, hub to hub for less money that a set of gears run. Might not be a bad option for a "grocery getter"...

I have a Camaro rear in the shop. I may measure it and see how it looks. Thought about bagging this one, since it will be a frame off.
I think the 56 housing has the smaller diameter axles and bearings. If you have a little oomph under the hood, you might want to consider a 57 housing ot a Camaro upgrade.
My thoughts as well plus less worries if she wants to run it down the strip.

She says her reaction time is based on the following:
From the time she feels the urge to go to WalMart until the time she breaks the plane of the happy face and door greeters.

Root, I have to agree with the rest, put the Camaro rear in. It is as strong or stronger than the 56, get parts at your local computer idiot parts store, and best of all is you already have it, so it's free.
The 56 rearend is really nothing wrong with it, but you need to get all the parts, so use the Camaro. I have one of those 55-64 rearends in my daily driver 37 Chevy truck and no problems except replaced an axle seal a while back. I did have to put slightly different wheel cylinders on it, could not get the exact ones needed. I found some that would work off a 67 Chevy application, not exactly right, but close enough and working fine.
Use the Camaro rear and have fun with the car. Looking forward to the progress pics.
