Can you get metalflake paints in rattle cans anymore? I'd like a few for a custom bike I made, and maybe some model cars.

Sycamore IL.

I remember the napa by me had it. Don't remember the brand, and there was only blue, red, and maybe green, but it was there. They even have lacquer in a can.

I thought I saw laquer spray cans at a parts house near me as well, what is the advantage to it??
About a year or so ago there was a post and link to a company that made what was supposed to be real good metal flake in the spraycan but I can't find it - maybe someone else remembers?

Yeah Seymour makes it. It comes in Black, Red, Gold, green, blue and silver. Oh and "Prizm"!! I only used the silver and I really liked it. I can get it here at work at cost. I was going to sell them on here, but it just wasnt cost effective for me at the time. I just got done painting a helmet the other day with this stuff. I'll try to get some pics up. The shit is unreal!

Some auto paint stores will put good urethane into a spray can for you. You can buy a Preval sprayer and mix your own. The Preval has it's own aerosol refills. It's good for small jobs until you can get your own air compressor and good gun. No mater what sprayer you use, use catalyzed urethane or two-stage base-clear. Anything less is uncivilized.

that Seymour stuff is really good. PM Abomber30

I just bought some "metallic" paint at Ace hardware (Home Depot has it too) that has TONS of flake in it. I think it's made by rustoleum. $5.50 a can

Towerpaint.com puts any PPG or DuPont color into 16oz cans with a fan tip for $15 a can.

Are those paints without hardeners or catalysts? Are they as durable as "real" paint?

I think that I'd like to use them for a single-stage (no clear) color. Do their prices depend on what paint's in the can?

i used rustoleum brand metalflake "red" on a motor a few years back. i got a little shit for having a PINK motor. but my pink motor made 450 horses or so, so it didn't really bother me. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Its pretty neat stuff to play with. There is a place here locally that will put HOK paint for you in a rattle can. It pricy but it HOK. On that helmet, its the Seymour silver flake with HOK candy red over it. All rattle can.

$5.50 per can let alone $15.00 each really adds-up. Go buy a Preval sprayer, a half pint of real automotive paint, reducer, hardener, mixing cup and a stir stick. You can paint your small project just like the big boys. The Preval has a good fan tip and is reusable. I should make it clear that if a rattle can had hardener inside, the contents would turn solid inside. If you have that done with real urethane, you have to use that can right away.

So how does the Preval sprayer work with heavy flake?

Rand Man
10-06-2004, 11:22 AM
I've used plenty of regular metalic but not the heavy flake I think you're talking about. The tip is as good or better than any rattle can on the market. If the companies mentioned here put out heavy flake in a can, then you shouldn't have a problem with the Preval. I would checkout their website and ask them.

What he said http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
The Preval will not shoot the big flake nor will the rattle cans you can get in a auto paint store with car color.
You can't put hardner in a rattle can(I have seen them lock up on the way home!)but you can in a Preval sprayer because you mix your paint and hardner at home.
My 2 cents, done it both ways...Damn that sounds dirty! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I use the Seymour too and buy it by the case to save money. I've used the gold, silver, green, blue, red, and prism. It's good stuff and looks awesome. You just need to clear coat the shit out of it like any metalfake. My tandem bike has like 20 coats of clear so far. It just gets deeper and deeper and looks freakin awesome in the sunlight. It's ten bucks a can though.
