View Full Version : I AM THE TUCK.. Any Tech on setting up REARS
I put my rear together like the cheaters would... just kinda threw it in...
I had it all apart, gears and axles OUT-
- I kinda took my time and made everything fit ok with a little slack... I could get away with a test run around the block before having some pro set the lash' on my gears right...
Its a 56 poncho rear.
I dig the way they're put together.
Is this something I can buy a book, some tools and do in the shop or would you guys reccomend bringing it in.
I'm gonna take it apart again so I can chrome the housing after I get the upper bars welded in for the suspension.

I am in no way speaking from experience, or any form of actual knowledge, here, but I'm not gonna let that stop me...
I HAVE HEARD that the average guy would be better off having a pro do it.

spend the money and have it done by someone that knows what they are doing.the cost of having it done right the first time is a good investment and a good piece of mind .

i'll have a dig through some magazines 2 moro morn and see if i can find some articles - its pretty straight foward - you want the front yoke/pinion to sit parallell so theres no uneccessary bend in the drive shaft

Just about any old Motors or Chiltons will give you basic instructions that a novice can understand. I spent yrars thinking it was rocket science and enlisting outside help. The first one I did was a Dana 60 and it tok all day laying under a pickup. I don't reccomend starting on one of those but if you understand the basics it isn't that complicated. One thing you will encounter with a used gearset is that you can't get them perfect. Usually if you get the pattern right they will have too much backlash and if you tighten up the backlash the pattern will be unacceptable. The pattern is more important and a little extra backlash isn't the end of the world.

Do it yourself. it's not hard. you need a dial indicator and thats about it. i am ass-u-me all you wanna do it put it back together correctly, and that you didn't change anything, you just took the pumpkin out.
The only book you'd need would be a reference to what the end play needs to be.
While its apart, might as well inspect the gears for wear and make sure nothing is loose or worn in there. Otherwise you just need to set the endplay on the axles. i'm pretty sure it's just like a mopar 8-3/4", which is easy to set up. Dave

That one's a drop out chuck, right? you didn't swap gears or take the differential apart? nothin to worry about.
I never take one to a shop, its not magic its only a rear end. I got an article here on setting up a 9" ford. Not the same rear but the principle is the same.
Drop me a note if you want I'll send it to you.
And yes if you strip it down for an overhaul you will need a dial indicator when you set the preload in the pinionshaft bearings.
