Okay,so I posted alot of questions about building up the 235 in my Imp, but it doesn't sound like it'll ever put out the horsies to move my fat ass. My next logical thought is to of course, buy a V8. I'm broke, so a crate is out of the question.
-Anyone know of an engine dealer in ATX/SA?
-What should I expect to spend on a turnkey 350-up with trans?
I know I flip-flop like crazy (damned John Kerry supporter http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) but it's a matter of a almost zero budget to work with.I can't just build up my 235 and go
"Oh, well, power sucks, let me shell out some more cash for a V8"
If I'm wrong about getting horses out of the 235, school me-I really don't know http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Austin, Texas/ San Antonio Texas.

Jeepers- If you want a fresh rebuild, there is a place here in town that Outlaw uses, and one in S.A that I think some of the Barons have used.

Also, check the Statesman and the SA paper for used stuff. SA especially has some good deals.

Buy you a cheap 70s car with 350/350, pull everything you need sell the rest for scrap. Otherwise good salvage yard engine about $650 or so, TH 350 $250. I bought an 85 Pontiac with 305 Chevy engine 700R4 for $100 drove it home. Tranny slips 3 & OD but got a good engine cheap plus 4 almost new tires, a full tank of gas and a 6 month old Wal Mart battery with warranty tag in the pouch..

The Buzzard is correct!

I have used City Motor Supply and had good luck. I cratered my SBC about 2 months ago and started searchin for descent short blocks. These guys sell 4 bolt 350s for $295, the core charge is $250. They even deliver to Austin. So far so good, mine is running great. They apparently build mass quantities of motors in Dallas and ship em down. I asked the guy if they had many returns due to machine or assembly error, he was honest and said a few now and then. The shop I was using before charges about 3 times what CMS does. Somehow they have still built crap motors for several friends.

I'm with BellM....If you want to do it cheap, find a cheap donor car. The engine costs are one thing, but all of the extras add up. Extras like carb, fuel pump, radiator...etc are things you wouldn't have to buy if you need to do it on the cheap. You can also sell the pieces you don't need...like the rear end for extra cash.

You have to earn your way into the 60 mph club man, there's no free rides here buddy!

The Reggie http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif has a good point. If you pickup a complete motor, you can probably get one for $400-$500. Then you've got all the accessories. Later you can turn in the block and $250 bucks to CMS and you've got a brand new fully dressed motor. If you want to dress it up more vintage and super shiny (chrome dont get ya home), just buy a long block and start hittin the swaps. BTW there are no complete shorty water pump Chevy engines in south Texas junk yards. Trust me I've looked.

Hell, was thinking you ment the band. Really good if you haven't seen them, they were called REO Speeddealer for a while.

I think I would try and find a running car/truck cheap. I think you could find one for a few hundred bucks.
