How do you do a lace paintjob? I know you spray through the lace, but what kinds of paint will make it through, consistency, do you tape the lace to the car? If not, how do you set up the lace? Any reference materials out there?

........I helped a girl paint a VW back in '68 (.....aaahhhh Flower Power!!!)........anywho. We rattle canned the background and then masked off the border. Taped the lace down flat and just lightly sprayed through it. Removed the lace and then fogged around the edges and then removed the mask. Get creative and have fun........
If it is a "serious" paint job, I would think the same process would apply only using better paint and a spray gun??

Why don't you guys use your frilly panties for that? You know, the ones with the Maltese crosses on 'em. You can puff the paint through a curly straw after huffing bug spray and get a nice design on the bodywork if you dodge the skidmarks left on the lacy parts.

Candy purple over silver metal-flake.
I like to tape the lace as well spray glue it. the spray glue does not effect the paint.

Don't have any pictures at the moment, but me and the wife before she was the wife, did a bunch of lace panels on the 62 Chrysler I had.
We masked off the area to be laced, then wet the lace and allowed it to mostly dry. While it was barely damp, we placed it over the panel, allowed it to dry completely, as it contuoured itself to the bumps and body lines of the hood, etc, and then taped it down so it wouldn't move.
Used Krylon gloss black and got great results. Her Mom had a cat caused she had paid like $5 a yard in 1969 dollars for the lace.
The car looked good, but the momma in law was torqued for a while.
Its relatively easy just use low pressure if using a paint gun to keep the lace from raising from the surface when hit with the air. Or use the spray tacky stuff.
Best of Luck and post pics when you gets done.
Also if anybody wants to they could send a copy of the old timey book to von_dad@earthlink.net
Take care

Fitty when I used to hang with this low rider guy. ( awsome painter) I wached and helkped him pop out a couple roofsdone like this 1.Base cote ( Black Example ) 2. Then he taped nothing just placed a old table cloth. and gently forked over the lace with air brush. Useing like a silver and this took him like a weak just to shoot the roof but the patterns were perfect. ( silver ). Then he shot a coat of flake in the areas that that he wanted. Then shot Differnt patterns around edges. Useing different base coats. #3 Shot a candy over all over the hole thing. This guys work was gorgeuos. He did alout of cars. around he was funny he was what you mite call a nostalgic low rider guy. I did some swivels for him and he got me some side work back in the day. But any ways I think he moved to over there by Betty Lane over in Clearwater if you know where that is?
