Just out of curiosity, does anyone know the "history" of the Maltese cross and how it's become a symbol for hardcore, old school rods and especially bikes? I know it's a WW1 German Iron Cross icon, but what's the connestion to rods and bikes?

The original Hot Rodders and Bikers emigrated to america from Malta...

Must be a new year, here comes the cross question again.

It was invented as a symbol of freedom from the trailer park back in the 70's.

Originally it was accompanied by a banner that read "It ain't home 'till ya take the wheels off".

It ('Iron Cross') goe's much farther back in time than most people realize. Is it real? That's up to you the reader. But back to the topic of cool car's, truck's and such..........

very long history, but heres a fast rundown. maltese and iron cross's are 2 different symbols from 2 parts of Europe... iron cross is Northern Europa (Prussia or modern day Latvia), maltese is Mediterranean (Island of Malta, Knights of Malta).

the IRON CROSS was adopted by the Prussian army. Prussia being home to the Teutonic Order who faught in the Crusades, they were considered to be some of the best mercenary soldiers at the time.

Hospitlars, Teutonics, Templars were a few of the well known Ordos during this time... ALL wore badges of the cross in different colors. in fact, Hospital is a derivative of the Hospitlar Order... ya see, theyd take the sick and dying and care for them, soldiers and peasants alike. what sets them apart from the other 2 orders is, theyd let commoners into their ranks... Templars and Tuetonics required noble blood.

the iron cross is a symbol of valor, it was used by Fred the Great in the 18th cent... again Germans/Prussians (Latvia) have a long history of top soldiering, and were available for hire... they faught along side us in the Revolutionary War as a matter of fact, we get a lot of our modern ceremonies from them.

back to the point... WWI and WWII Germans used this as their highest award. the Knights Cross and the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class.

there is a shitload of history behind this symbol... it isnt a Nazi specific icon and wasnt a sign of rebellion until after WW2.. and gay ass hollywood.

this is a short half assed run down... it can be more detailed but i have to work now.

bye

thanks Plan 9. i do know that after WWII, at some point, the surfers addopted it as a symbol of rebelion. just to tick off their parents i presume. anyway, i've read that Ed Roth, being involved in both the surf culture and the Hot Rod culture of the time, started using it in the context of the hot rods. his interest in that symbol likely had at least a little to do with his parents being German immigrants.

thats my take on the more "modern" use of the symbol known as the "Iron Cross". ...as for the Maltesse Cross. well, you better hit the books on that one, i have hot rods to build...

You guys are all dumb. Here's the real story!

In ancient Egypt, there was a Pharoah named Munayes who had a glorious racing cart that was pulled by the majestic Jewish-Egyptian dogs ( Jahtleyeau (http://www.jewishegyptian.bravepages.com/) ). On the Bi-annual "Beautiful Sunrise of the Kart Draggings" (as it was called in the day), Munayes wanted a unique insignia for all of Egypt, nay, ALL of the WORLD to remember him by, and his favorite artist, Ratileah Finkk, did his honor well by inventing the very first Maltese Cross. It brandished his wonderful golden chariot and stunned his opponents with it's beauty, making him the eventual winner.

Actually Hitler got the swastika from the eastern indians along with the whole concept of Aryans. Aryans are green eyed, light skinned Indians who are the elite (Brahman) in the caste system...

Sorry, the thread didn't print all the way out. My response is redundant. That Hank Cash comment about one being iron and the other maltese had me laughing for ten minutes http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Most of Indian culture and the caste system itself comes from the Vedas. The Vedas is indoeuropean in origin and was the holy book of the Aryans. The Iranians, Afgans, and Indians are all influenced by the Aryan migration out of central Europe. Hitler got into the work of a guy whose name escapes me that tried to say the Aryans were not from central Europe (the lands of the Slavs in Hitlers view) and were "viking" in nature. He tried to tie in the probability that Vikings made it into China, hence green eyes, red hair, etc. on some people in far western China and ties into the bodies that Chinas gov. found and won't even let Nation Geographic look at. Now to tie it into the HAMB, the Aryans ride Royal Infields http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

hitler had the shits one night and after stepping off of the porcelain god he looked in amazement at the object that lay steaming in the shitter...he immediately ordered Himler to join him in the jon and see what his ass has kreated....they both stared....their BROWN EYES were wide-open and astonished at the shape that emerged from hitler's ass, they named this "creation" ass cross....but that didn't sit well with the rest of the nazi party so they changed it to it's current status the maltese cross...in other words who gives a shit!!

Oh, I get it now.....A bunch of smart-ass rodders created it it malta, and dumped it on the mush-brained Americans during Kaiser Wilhelm's rein of terror at the Salt Flats, whereupon they also blindly followed the cult, plastering it over all things with wheels, and berating those that asked of its history.

Thanks, guys.

FWIW, the first cross I ever noticed was on the T-shirts and decals from Schnieder Cams from San Diego. As I recall they were also the first printed T-shirts at the drags. Around 1960-62.
