View Full Version : Brake Lining Question?
Howdy all, Tim here. I had some questions about relining your own brakes....there was a thread on here about this but I lost it.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif At any rate, I am running 1940 ford brakes and need to replace the linings on the shoes. I know that you can buy the linings and rivets for pretty cheap through Joblot. My question is this. Could you buy the linings and bond them to the shoes with the brake glue that is used on some shoes? If so has anyone done this? Do you know where you can buy the glue? Would there be any problem with using the glue to bond shoes that were meant to be riveted? Any help on this would be great.
Thanks
Tim

Man, that sounds risky at best. We've got a local place here in KC that does it on an exchange basis for around 10-15 bucks per wheel if you have a good set of cores. They keep them in stock most of the time too. Just walk in with cores and money and walk out with new shoes. Call around in your area and see if an industrial brake and clutch place does/will do it.
WOW!? no thoughts on this. I would think that this would be a good thing to look into...to avoid core charges and such.

Rivet them or get some good replacements.
The bonded ones are iffy.
It's no fun when they let go and are rolling around in your drum making contact randomly.
Don't ask how I know http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Do the potential savings really justify the hassle and risks ?
I think not.
And even if you figure out how to do it properly,
and find all the correct materials,
will they be any better than the ones you can buy off the shelf?
I've run bonded shoes,no problems, but they were made by professionals.
Would I attempt to bond my own? NO.
Brakes are not the plce to try and save a buck.
And if your time is worth anything,it would be better spent doing something else.
I was looking for ways to save money...NOT be unsafe...thats why I asked the question rather than using crazy glue and particle board. I will probably wind up getting them through NAPA....its easyier than shipping back the cores.

Don't throw away the cores. My suppliers have eliminated the core charge. We no longer save them for the daily drivers. We just pitch them. That's fine for the easy to get modern stuff, but not for a collector car. It may come a day when they refuse a sale without a core.

That's for sure! Went looking for rebuilt 348/409 water pumps and they told me because no one returned the cores, they can't get them anymore.
They (the rebuilders) have the parts to do the rebuilds BUT NO CORES!
