View Full Version : Who's your H.A.M.B. MVP?

I've been on here for a couple years and have had a quite a few people help me out with parts, information, labor etc. Now I would hope my brother would give me a hand, but when people you only know by association to the HAMB offer their assitance it makes you appreciate what Ryan has brought us. Since I've seen a lot of negative posts, I thought everyone could use some upbeat action!

Describe your most appreciative "HAMB" moment when you received help in the form of parts, labor, anything from someone. I'd like to offer a "trophy" of some sort to the winner picked by me and any ideas would be appreciated.

Uhhhhh.... right now I'm going to have to give props to Farmer, Plan9, and Luke Jivetalker for getting my roadster body started on its way home. There are others who will help in the coming weeks to fulfill the trip. Damn this place rocks....

I would hope that most brothers would help another brother out...a generalization, not a doubt. Take it easy.

Sorry about that UNK. MVP is the Most Valuable Person award, not Most Volatile Personality, not Most Sensative Hamber MSH, and surely not Most Unnecessary Posts by a Hamber.

in all honesty,if it was up to me to chose ,it'd be andysdeuce,(don anderson) no offence to any Hambers ive meet or done buiness with,"most" of you are all great http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif,but Don has been a true friend and a positive insperation since i met him from the HAMB.
we've hung out alot since, and its nothing for him to hop in his deuce and drive down to hang with me and my dad.not to mention all the other cool things he has done.

havent met a mofo that cool in aLONG time,.

Not sure if you remember the Big Olds Thrash (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB1&Number=330459&fpart=& PHPSESSID=) that took place in April but it was a motivating event for me. Hatch is to be commended for getting the ball rolling and Fab32 for offering his garage for the "event", not to mention all the HAMB folks that showed up and worked their butts off that day. A number of HAMB folks donated materials and money to be used for materials and nourishments. The list of HAMB members that I owe a debit of graditude to is long and I'm going to be forever grateful.

Read more about the Thrash here (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB1&Number=346527&fpart=& PHPSESSID=)

Photos (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB1&Number=357341&fpart=& PHPSESSID=) from the Thrash.

I think it goes without saying but I'm going to say it anyway, that because of the HAMB I have met some of the coolest, most down to earth people on this planet and have the most awesome circle of friends a girl could ask for.

There is some super secret plans in the works for Big Olds this winter that involve another very special HAMB friend but I'm not letting the cat outta the bag till "it" has started. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Silent Rick stepped up to donate a great MoPar stick flywheel that fit my old 331 Chrysler Hemi and wouldn't accept any payment. It was the last piece needed to get the motor/transmission complete enough to light off, which Tuck did...
Desoto helped with great Hemi information and a Hemi starter mount plate for my engine too....sent it to my house for a very attractive price...thanks again, Skip.
This is not to slight Poncho Billy who hand delivered the rear end out of his personal car [57 Pontiac}, driving it out to Omaha from New York City! It fit into the trunk of his 57 Starchief. It goes into my 41 Pontiac.
And Mike Bishop is a hero for helping all of us with mucho info on early fords and flatheads. Hell, he could probably write a book on traditional ford hot rods.
This is a dangerous subject because we could easily forget a really important favor done by a really good dude and have this dude feel slighted.....hope it doesn't happen.

Ok, folks, I understand that there are many Hambers that have affected us, but I think we can all think of ONE instance that would deserve a Most Valuable distinction. I've gotten advice from AV8, parts and help from Crestliner, generous offers to help me out from various Hambers in Chicago, Continental John, MikeZ, Django, etc. But if I were to tell a story it would go like this....

After helping me gather several parts; using his enate ability to get great, not good, but great deals for my first postwar/pre-mucscle car project SamIYam offered to help me out for a week, not a night, but a full week of his time away from other projects that were paying him a nice penny to do the work that he so graciously offered without my asking. I agreed that I would love the help, and couldn't get started without learning some basic fabrication skills first and what better way to learn than a week long crash course with a master...mechanic, not what you all were thinking. Not only did he offer the help, but he offered a place to stay and some delicious ribs and tasty treats along the way. (You can't get Real Good Mexican Food in Chicago, it just doesn't happen) We both worked some serious time on this project with some help from others along the way, but Sam, Kate, Nate, and Cal offered me their home and all the help I could handle. If I could do half of what we did I'd have a rolling chssis by now. Matt

For me it would be Kustombuilder and his wonderful wife Cherryblossom. Mike is a very talented builder and has been more than generous with some labor. Of course some tasty parts have went his way in trade! And for Kris all the great meals and hospitality!

I know it's hard, but we are talking about MOST Valuable, and it probably can't be said because everyone is helpful, but maybe we can all share some stories, that's what I'm hoping for some good tear jerkers.

OK, here's one.

After going to the HAMB drags and failing to make a good run......I find out that Flat Top Bob has been sneaking around raising money to buy a Hilborn pump for the Drag~N~Fly, just so I could make it to Austin. That's a friend for ya. I made him return all the money but I won't forget the gesture. Bob is golden.

It would have to be Radshit, who hooked me up with one of his buds this summer when I broke a crank in New Mexico. They had me back on the road, heading for the HAMB drags in less than 4 hours. And we had only met once before, at the first HAMB drags.

But there are many others too.

The chioce i'm gonna make is not because of part's, or advice, or anything of that nature, although it does have a direct connection to them all.
I'd have to choose Ryan as MVP.

Now, this is not some 'ass kissing' post. It's a fact.

If he didn't create the HAMB, we as a whole wouldn't have any of the memories, assistance, part's, or money from sale's in the classified's etc....
I'm sure you get my point.

Now, because he built this here HAMB, i've met some cool folk's, gotten some kickass parts for a lot less then i could have gotten them from just about anywhere else, hopefully helped other's out the same way, and learned a lot to boot!

Pretty cool in my oppinion..all because some guy started a message board..

Like we used to say in the lab, TNTC (Too Numerous to Count)
If I had to pick one member, I'd say it's enjenjo.
Between the RRT and the HAMB, I think I've seen him post the words "I don't know" about 3 times over the past several years.
A ton of knowledge, and more than willing to share and help.
At the risk of being branded a kissass "Like my bud Tony" I'd say Ryan, for giving us dis place, and putting up with the drama and BS that goes with it.
And Fartcat for the same reason on the RRT.
I'd like the thank everyone that helped me out personaly with parts and knowledge. You know who you are.
You guys ROCK! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Shit, I couldn't even BEGIN to narrow it down to just ONE! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

For sure, Choprods, Roadstar, DirtyT, RocketJ2, Hotrodladycrusr, Curious Rash, and about a hundred others have had a hand in making it possible for me to get the old rustbucket Chevy as far as it's come in the past year...without their help, it wouldn't have happened!

Props to Ryan for creating this treasured place which brings us together across the miles...NONE of us would be here helping each other if it weren't for him, so maybe he gets the MVP award!

Fuck...we'll just pin the MVP award on the HAMB itself...cuz we all win when we give of ourselves to help out other rodders!

PakRat32, I agree with you.
It is not sucking up or what ever it is termed, just stating fact.

There are many people who have displayed acts deserving recognition.

And I only know those that have happened since I came on the board.
To start naming them in one post would almost guarantee that some would be left out, so as this post continues, I certainly hope all get heard about.

But, it is Ryan who lets us come together in his domain that makes it all possible.

Ryan is my choice.

The folks who have helped others and will continue to help, really are good people any way.
And will always be good people.

It is cool to give them recognition and I reccomend to continue to publish their acts of generosity, helpfullness, showing them our appreciation for what they do.

what the? what is this, some kinda Thanksgiving thing?

and jeez Ryan, didja have to use my name? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

this place has truely been an inspiration for me,

there are a lot of people here that I may never meet in person but I still consider freinds.

for some reason Nads comes to mind http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

as I was reading this I was thinking exactly what Redmeat said,

the top chop we, oldbeat, kmember and myself
(there were others that helped and made it happen, but we three were the core crew)
did on jkustom's car was the most fun I'd had in a long long time.
all those guys are aces.

it should have been called HAMBchop Northwest, 'cause there must have been just about every HAMBer within 300 miles there.

I have to say, without a doubt Racefab is near if not at the top of my list.

thank you Fred.

for me? easy...

FeO2 - Charlie.

a while back i bid on a t-shirt and posters and stuff from the jalopy showdown auctioned by scarylarry. my bid got beat, but then THAT bid got beat by Charlie, who remarked in his post that if he won, larry was to send the stuff to me!

of course, HAMB-karma arranged an auction victory for Charlie, and he graciously sent the entire package to me, expecting nothing in return... what a champion.

i also owe Don Dillard a favour, he sent me a CD of images of a particular car that i really wanted to study, again, for nothing, and expecting nothing.

i've not repaid the favour to either of these fine gentleman just yet, but i DO have an idea of what i can send them... and once i stop working 15 hour days i'll do it.

(while urkillinmesmalls isn't looking, i'll sneak in a quick attaboy: best string of tech-posts in the last twelve months - 60's Style. awesome stuff).

thanks to all for letting me be a part of the HAMB. it rocks.

For me it is a toss up between Radshit and Killer. Radshit hooked me up with some much needed Y-block parts on the sole basis that I am a HAMBer. Killer has helped me with so many things that I couldn't begin to tell ya'll about all of them.

So I just wanna say "Thanks Guys" and tell Killer that when I see him, I am going to give him such a crop dusting that he is going to need to go outside and smoke!

There are a bunch of you that have helped in tech questions I have had, Thanks! SammyYam offered up free goods at one point, Sheesh. Some Hambers have become Great Friends, Ryan, you are responsible for that.
ElPola was a friend before the HAMB (in fact he prodded me into this joint) but I've got to thank him anyway for putting another Volare on the road HAHA! Safari55 did my wiring, Big Thanks! I miss InjectedA, he always had useful and entertaing info. But, love him or hate him, I'd have to say Germ. There are a lot of deserving folks on my list but way out front is C9. I got to know Jay as I was just really getting started on the coupe and he became my mentor. Everything from his stories, motivation, generosity, technical prowess to advice but most of all his friendship. The kind of work he puts out is always well reasoned and the kind of stuff that puts pro's to shame. I wish I could come close to his attention to detail.

He's one of a kind and I feel lucky to have him as a friend.

For me personally...?

Fatassbuick and Scotch. They taught me more than I would have ever known about Buicks. Fatass has treated me like I've known him all of my life - even though I have never met him or heard his voice!! Scotch made me realize that I will never really be a mechanic, 'cause I don't even understand a percentage of what he already knows, and he's still learning.....

Then there Is Moriarity, So What, and ??? for helping me learn more about bubble tops for a project that will be done before I die.....

From an observational point. AV8, C9, Choco, Rocky, Tman and Ironhunter are always ready at the drop of a hat to educate the HAMB general public in tech/engine related help. Each have their own specialties from Pontiacs, SBCs to Nailheads. AND they're OGs!!!!! I might have forgotten someone here - oh like Axle perhaps.....I've been beat to the punch on a handful of Pontiac questions by him....

For my own amusement....Carps, JimA, RF, Bobbleed and Tuck. No reason - I just tend to read their posts...

For having more heart than any other rodder - and on TWO message boards to boot - you can't touch HRLC.

I gotta say big thanks to JAPCHRIS. When I moved to South London from Australia a few years ago, him and his friends really hooked me up. I didnt have a car, so they would pick me up and take me along to all the UK events, including the drags, nationals, wednesday night Ace Cafe meets, and even tuesday night at the pub with the lads!! He is a great guy, thanks for "welcoming" me intothe UK scene Chris!!

Haven't met anyone in the states, yet http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

in my opinion just about everyone on here has helped someone out in one way or another. i nominate everyone who shared their concerns and advice after the passing of my father last december as my HAMB MVP. i would like to give a special thanks to Dondanno, Jerry, and long island vic for sending me much appreciated parts for my project. also, a thanks to Old Beet for contributing. finally, ( i am about to stop rambling), a thanks to wayfarer and salcheeza for all their amazing help through the whole process. if i left anyone out, i am sorry. thanks again for everything!-fleet

Most people on the HAMB seem to be good folks, but just on the basis of technical know-how I would have to say Lancaster and Enjenjo . HRLC seems to be everywhere with her camera, and as said before, if it wasn't for Ryan we wouldn't be having this discussion...

This is a total no-brainer. Many have help in many way, but none of it possible if not for a way to find/meet them.

Ryan, enjenjo, Fat Cat, the host of the StreetRodStuff and Kerry form the original RRT are deffinitly MVP's. Them just for having the place for us to meet the wonderful people that have helped us!

They are the eggs that the helpful chickens hatched from! They are the primodial ooze that bred the life of possible helpfulness. They are the atom molecules that allowed us all to form together to make the chain-reaction explosion of knowledge and going out of the way to help that is the HAMB amd RRT.

Without the place to meet.................. C9, harlan, AV8, Killer, samIyam, Root, germ when sober (he's very knowledgable and helpful but doesnt want anyone to know it), TMan, Elploacko, Even draglinksccotownrumberlredneckwhatevereieio once you get around the drama is helpful with posting his progress for others to learn from, and many others, too many to list, amazing brains out there, would have no way to help all of us.

Some things are no-brainer.

They get a huge pat on the back from me. Thanks Guys!
