What aftermarket valve covers and intakes were available for the sbc in 1962 or earlier. Cal Customs, Eldebrock ?????

I know the corvettes were popular as were the stock scripted ones. I was thinking of chroming my script valvecovers but thought I would find out what was used back then.

Geez, 70 bucks for a SBC intake was big bucks in 1955.

I guess we're all spoiled by 120 dollar Edelbrock Performers nowdays.

It's actually a page from the Edelbrock 1955 catalog. I was surprised that they had the valve covers and the trips manifold the same year as it's introduction.

Here is the rest of the catalog... Edelbrock catalog. (http://fototime.com/ftweb/bin/ft.dll/detailfs?userid={2DF1D2F1-A0E4-40E6-9484-8B9287279599}&ndx=0&slideshow=0&AlbumId={5E3531D5-1867-4DAB-A737-844512A514D0}&GroupId={BA12343E-7F91-4868-97C2-BD03D7F2D80B}&screenheight=600)

if you had that stuff for a sbc in 1955 you whould have to been a gold chainer by todays standards http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Had a look through Hot Rod yearbooks 1 & 2 last night (from 1961 & 1962) to see what the feature cars were wearing ...

As far as intakes go, there were factory single 4, Edelbrock 3x2, Corvette 2x4, Weiand 4x2, Edelbrock & Offy 6x2, Hilborn and Algon stack injection.

Valve covers were chrome chevrolet script plus finned corvette, Offenhauser, Weiand, Edelbrock and some no-names that look like the Moon ones you can still get.

All in all a good looking bunch http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Vic Sr. actually had a hand in the developement stage of the small-block. They were given engines at the VERY beginning to work on speed parts. Chevy was dead set on dethroning the Flathead AND its GM siblings http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

FWIW, most Cal custom stuff us younger guys associate with "trad" was produced in the late 60s and early 70s http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Tommy,

I sold one of those a few years ago. You see alot of them on Ebay. I found out why too, they dont fit crap. A C355 will only fit a 265. 20 guys will get on here and say Im full of it, but they should go buy one and try it. I've always heard that it would fit, but the casting didn't even cover the intake ports on the heads. Thanks for posting the pic.

While we're on the subject, does anybody know if Edmunds made anything for an SBC?

I've been looking through my old mags and can't seem to find anything. I was hoping they made valve covers or maybe a 2x4 intake since it seems like they made them for almost every other make. Anybody have a copy of an Edmunds catalog from the late fifties?

Found an inflation calculator on the web ...
Intake $69.50 in 1955 = $454.49 in 2003
Install kit $13.50 in 1955 = $88.28 in 2003
Wow!
