a buddy of mine has a 60 nomad with what we thought was a 235. he messed up some pushrods when his valves stuck and bought a few new ones and the ones he got were too short, by like 3 inches or so. we got the thinking, and remembered the guy that sold him the car said he thought it had a different engine in it. i tried mortec, but they're all V8 stuff. i'll post some pics of it, maybe that'll help, and if you guys lknow the numbers on em and where exactly the numbers are, i'll get those later on. mebbe it's a 292? that might be kinda rad.

That's a 235. You can tell a later model 6 real quick because it has 7 valve cover screws. And many other differences.

Try

They have a page on engine numbers.

Maybe it is a 261. I haven't actually laid eyes on one in 25 years so I can't say but they were of the same vintage as the 235.

848 is the "good" 235 head.

(that A is a 4)

that's what we figured, but the push rod deal was kinda odd. how long are 235 pushrods supposed to be? the new ones he got were like 6 or 7 inches long, the ones in the engine are ALOT longer. luckily he had a whole extra set in the car when he got it. thing came with TONS of extra parts. not that i doubt the omnipotence of autozone and the correctness of parts, especially for old cars or anything.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

the inliners site has casting numbers, so you can look behind the starter and find the number and see if it's a 235 or 261. They have the same general appearance, just a bigger bore in the 261.

Odds are slim it's a 261, but you never know!

Probably the parts store's computer goes back to the mid 60s, and they gave him 230 pushrods, which are way short and have the wrong ends also.

What the heck is that Garden Hose Faucet doing on there?

As for the push rods, I think mine were longer that 6-7 inches... maybe more in the range of 9"-10"

But who knows, as a woman I've been lied to about how long 9"-10" really is for so long it's hard for me to know! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I think I have the same head and my engine is a 235. The casting number on the block is along the oil pan rail on the fuel pump side. That's the best way to check.

thanks again everybody. i told my buddy to check this post out, so hopefully he's got it figured out. that car is kinda funny, actually. it's real solid for a 44 year old ohio car, frame and floors are awesome, gas tank is solid, most of the body is solid too. but the paint is faded here and there, a couple of rust holes, paint ground off the top by the previous owner, and a mangled fin and a mangled front fender around the lights. for what it is, it's a great car. but, it looks so damned funky, he isn't going to do anything to it for the foreseeable future because it just seems right. big, funky kinda beat up car. the faucet was added by a previous owner and was just, well, hilarious. it'll be gone soon, leaks a little bit. he does wanna put a 2 bbl intake on it, pretty cool that it has a good head, maybe the added cfm will make an improvement.
