OilFilter Problems?

Hello, all:

I'm new here. I followed a link that put me here. A member had a problem with a couple Fram filters, which gave me palpatations. Although not a jalopy builder, I am a fan. I love hemi's and rat motors, all small blocks. The sound of an American V8 is wonderful. I have not had a V8 in a family sedan for years, however. Very sad.

Now that I have planted a smooch on as many fannies as possible at one time, I do have a couple questions, and hope for some great answers.

There are many synthetics out there. I have used Royal Purple, but decided to stick with Mobil. I use the synthetics in a standard family car, on road, no racing, V6, Nissan Maxima. Did the same with my Pontiac. Any suggestions on synthetic oils?

I have started using Mobil 1 oil filters. I compared them in the store, opening a Mobil 1 that suits my car, along side a K & N filter that suits my car. Staring down the hole, they look the same - I mean as if made by the same manufacturer. Even down to identifying stampings on the head with the threads, etc. As neither company makes oil filters, does anyone know who is making these for either company? Is it, as I suspect, the same manufacturer? Are they worth the additional cost? K&N is much higher than the Mobil 1 filter, by the way.

I also installed a K&N air filter. Nothing noticeable in the way of better mileage, I must admit (from the addition of the air filter alone).

I use Amsoil synthetic tranny fluid in my automatics. No complaints. But, it is under normal driving conditions, again. Mobil now has a synthetic tranny fluid. Any thoughts from anyone - Amsoil vs. Mobil 1 as synthetic trransmission fluid?

My objective, of course, is to have efficient vehicles for the maximum amount of time.

I travel quite a bit for work. The best average I can muster is an increase of about 5 to 6 mpg on "cruise controlled" mileage over using standard engine and tranny fluids. Around town, there is no noticable help from synthetics. Since 10% ethanol, I've lost about 50 miles to the tank full around town.
Plus my kid's corn pops are more expensive.

Thanks for any thoughts on the subject matter.

Stick with Wix/Napa or Purolator, most of the others are crap. I wouldn't spend the money for a K&N for everyday driving. Just my 2cents.

The Mobil and K&N filters are made by the same co. Both are of high quality. Wix, Hastings, Napa Gold are also excellent!

Thanks, gentlemen.

I've always heard Wix was a good filter. Napa made by Wix? Easy to find then.

Best regards,

Just found this ad in an Oct '51 Popular Mechanics, shows Joe E. Brown & and really "mucked up" oil filter. Had a neat little story with it, & something about ".. if you car doesn't have an engine oil filter..." Yeah oil filters were options on some cars back then I guess. Purolator had kits available for something like $6.95. Talk about traditional?

I saw a link to this on a different forum. It is an interesting update on the older oil filter study. Conclusion is that Fram is still junk.
