hey dudes,
I have a couple questions...for my bike that im building i want to run a one-off custom leaf spring front end..styled after the 30's indian's...first, what kind of material do automobile companys use to make thier leaf springs? second, if any what kind of car do you think i could cannabalize to aquire a decent leaf spring? third, do you guys know of any companys that reproduce the leaf pack specifically for the indian front ends? and, is their such a place where i could get the front end tested to see if im going to die doing 100 down the freeway?

Check-out what original springer ft. end's are selling for. Second, these leaf pack's are Super light weight. Be difficult to find an auto application to rob from and then make work for a cycle. Custom made will take more time but can be done. With time, some of the more helpfull HAMB'ers will be able to steer you in the right direction.

Check out springs from an utility trailer, they worked on a sidecar I built.....easy to find too.

Also try checking out retrofit handling kits for the older British sports cars. Many now use a lightweight composite spring that you might be able to modify. Try www.mgbmga.com (http://www.mgbmga.com) for some idea of spring size and construction.
Good luck Goose, that sounds like a pretty challenging project. Let us know how it works out.

Super light weight leaf packs???? On an Indian????? You obviously have never picked up one of them. I am surprised at how heavy they are every time I have to pick one up. It shouldnt be hard at all to take a leaf spring off a Model A and cut both ends off. There you have two, with the spring eye on each pack.
