"Wholly crap!"

I think it's one of those " if you have to ask you probably can't afford it" questions...the same kind I always ask http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Then you need an intake mainfold, and headers.

Kinda makes you wish you could go out back to the creek and pan for gold doesn't it?

Plus the cost of block machine work, crank, rods, pistons, cam, misc parts. Not a cheap engine to build by any means. You'd probably be looking at close to ~$20k when its all said and done.

You guys would be amazed at how many engines are around that have more than 15K in them.

About 25k for a good 360 sprint car motor

Just Gary
10-02-2004, 07:44 AM
That would really upset my "Can you really build a $5K car" budget http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And oh by the way, the Scot-blown Ardun-headed flatty in the black Shine/SoCal roadster still only made ~320 HP; about what you'd get with a mostly stock 350 SBC.

Ahhh... but then you don't find a SCoT blown, Ardun equipped flathead everyday!!!

They NEVER fail to draw a crowd and LOTS of OHH's and AHHH's!

350's are like belly buttons; everyone's got one.

AND you're making over 1hp/cu" with a flathead (OK, so the head ain't quite "flat" anymore http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif )

Ernie, at least I can dream! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I guess I'll just settle for the SCoT!

BTW - New engine is on the stand waiting for the META-LAX. Trying to decide if a harmonic damper is worth the investment. Any opinions??

Back in 1978 I sold a NOS set of ARDUN heads to a vintage speed equipment dealer for $2,500.00, a record at that time. They paid for the plumbing in the house I was building, still think it was a good deal.

Saw this one in NJ a couple weeks ago.
Not for sale.

Dual carbs were mounted side by side.
Brass tag reads "Made in England"

Note the milled area where NEW YORK has been removed and the brass tag riveted in place. This is a later set of original heads.

Have any of you seen the New Aluminum Flathead block that Don F. just released ? Guess we will see complete Alu engines with Ardun heads in the near future .

I just met an old guy who has three...yes, three Ardun motors (full motors) in his garage! He used to race the Salt Flats and has them left over from his racing days!

psychodaemon, I think you're right. I just saw a piece on Don's special blocks. (for Ardun heads; no valve pockets)

The one shown on Flathead Jack's site is a joint venture with Mark Kirby of Motor City Flatheads.

If Don, Jack and Mark could keep the price down, (if only http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif) then flatheads and Ardun heads just might enjoy a come back!!

If I understand Jack's site; the blocks would have a valve relief, which would make then unusable with the Arduns. (although they claim ALL original flathead accesories will bolt on)

If they would/could leave the relief out, "O ring" the deck, bolt on a set of the new Arduns and with 300 + c.i., and add a BLOWER; THIS COMBINATION could leave a few SBC's in the "dust!" (note the LONG STROKE!! and 4 bolt mains!)

I have a funny feeling this could easily turn into a $50 k engine!

Would I buy one if I had the chance? HELL YES !!!!

safariknut, I can't decide which picture I like the best; the Arduns, the STRAIGHT body or the "kidney bean" wheels!!

That car is in a word,BEAUTIFUL!The wheel wells have been raised 4",it is STRAIGHT,has 36 dash in it that looks like it belongs, and the front spring perch is sort of a,"reverse suicide"i.e.:the spring mount is behind the tube crossmember and the spring is behind the axle.Sounds weird;you have to see it to really appreciate it.Wish I had taken pics of it;some real engineering in the car. Those kidney beans are 17" on the rear(15"fronts).

and here's a couple of shots of the car that engine is in. It's no secret John Hall, the owner, has $60,000 in that engine. Fuel Pump or Ray might know the whole story but something about it blowing up the first time they started it.

Hey Denise, how ya keepin'?
Talking about "blowing up" an Ardun equiped flathead, reminds me of the fellow that pitted beside us at Bonneville in '02.

He had driven from Chicago with his daughter who was going to drive.

I was on the right side of the car (admiring) at the front. The race car was on jack stands. He had told me that he didn't have a chance to tune the engine yet. (last min. "trash") He fired the engine, gently bring the revs up, when I heard a "clicking" sound that got louder and louder. Then the engine STOPPED DEAD.

Seems in his rush to get the engine buttoned up and the car loaded, he had forgotton to tourqe the connecting rod on #1 cylinder. During the teardown he discovered that the heads escaped damage, but the crank and rods were "toast."
