View Full Version : Question...Re: P.O.S. Junkyard Rims

Picked up a set of GM steelies at a junkyard and cleaned 'em up real nice and painted them. They appeared to be pretty solid and I didn't see any flat spots or dents...they looked good to the naked eye. I took the rims to a local tire shop to have my whitewalls (Denman 4ply-polys) mounted and when I picked them up there were all these counterweights on the wheels, one in particular had like 4 weights. I questioned the guy that did the mount/balance and he said some of the rims were "slightly bent". My question is...has anyone ridden on less than perfect rims and if so...how did it affect handling/tire wear, etc... Like I said...they looked good to the naked eye so they aren't trash, but they sure did end up with a lot of counterweights (luckily on the inside). Should I roll what I got or look for new rims? The tires are all mounted now http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif.

Is he sure it's the rims? My Coker firestones were WAYYYYYYYY out of balance. The old ass tires on the rims had reallly tiny weights, and when the Firestones were put on there was alot of big ass weights on them.
Just my experience.

Some times certain tires will require alot of weight to balance them.
Bias ply's normally take a larger amount of weight to balance than a radial. Something to do with the way they're constructed. I have a couple "slightly bent" (they're fine) rims on the Byooik and the radials on it now have hardly any weight on them. The Sears WWW bias ply's I had on it took quite a bit.

been my experiance the steel wheels(doesn't matter whos) are not very damn concentric as in egg-shaped so run 'em, i would.

Any decent tire guy will break the bead and turn the tire 180 on the wheel to see if it takes less weight.
Sometimes, the heavy part of the tire coincides with the heavy part of the wheel and you wind up needing tons of weight. Turning the tire a 1/2 turn sometimes helps a bunch.
I used to work as a mechanic for the post office and we had to buy recaps and put them on our little mail trucks. I've been there and done that for sure.

Jay is right,I found this out with my Cokers.(pic)
This is a trick I learned from motorcycle roadracing.
If it looks like its going to take a lot of weights break the tire back down from the rim and turn it some on the wheel, has always worked for me.
Just an added note, the tire guy I "hope" tried this for you....2 tire guys showed me this trick.

Got to agree with this one....After working on bikes for awhile I can tell you that the bike tires are marked with a dot of ink to let you know where the "light" area is. Put this spot where the valve stem is and you will cut the need for weights down tremendously...put it opposite and you'll wish you get paid hourly instead of flat rate! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I knew I would get to the bottom of this with a little help from my friends on the HAMB. I'm headed over to the tire shop to try spinning the tire on the rim a little bit and ditch some of those weights.
See y'all down the road.
