well, my original plan for my bike was to run a panhead generator motor...but that is looking pretty expensive...so im looking to maybe run a some kind of triumph engine..my question is ...can you run a magneto on these engines? are the trump motors ran with alternators or generators? and can you run a linkert carb setup?
Let me know if there is a better carburation system to run with these engines..but keep in mind that im trying to stay on the cheap end of things..

Trumpet motors run very well with mags. Joe Hunt used to offer one I think. Most brit bikes seems to me ran Alternators, but you can run a generator if you can find a take off shaft to turn it. Linkert will almost always work, for looks it's great but there are better carb choices like Amals.

cool...amals came stock didnt they....or there just a better choice...i would like to run a linkert setup...do you know why amals are better? or anything i can do to better the linkert setup?
Amals are great especially the new concentrics, easy to set-up too but go 25% lower on the mainjet than a monobloc. As for mags a lot of pre unit engines had them along with dynamo a great reliable easy to fix set-up........Marq

But you gotta admit a polished set of Amals with velocity stacks look great

This question has so many possible answers.
Triumphs had generators, MagDyno from the start until after the war when the generator and mag were split.
Alternators arrived in the early fifties on the TRW, then the entire range by 1963.
Amals were stock on almost all Triumphs, Solex on a few.
But I am unclear as to WHY you would want to run a magneto on an alternator engine?? There is NO need for a battery, just kicking them over is enough to start any Triupmh that is reasonably in tune.
Joe Hunt was/is the name for mags, but be prepared to open thy wallet wide.
Cheap carburretion thy name IS Amal. Concentrics are easy to play with, and fair reliable, but they DO wear. Monoblocs don't wear as bad, but parts are a trifle scarcer. I personally think a Monobloc looks better.
Dell'orto are better all 'round, but are more expensive too.
Mikuni are the current choice of the monied set, and they are purported to really be worth the effort/cash.

Well Goose, if you're gonna be ridin' this bad boy and not just showin' it, my recommendation would be one of the Brit unit twins with Amals and a boyer ignition. Pretty smooth and dependable and with all the fins, pretty retro/cool lookin'.
So your Dad CNC machines? You lucky dog. Now that you're a HAMBer can we start putting in our orders for custom parts now? LOL
