OK here's the deal. I've got a rough '38 Chev coupe that I want to build into a street version of a dirt track jalopy racer. I want to adapt '53 Chevy brakes to the '38 spindles to get the better brakes and five lug hubs. I know I have seen old tech articles on this but don't remember the details.Do any of you know exactly how this is done? I have the parts already rounded up,but some advice sure would be appreciated before I start taking things apart. I'll post some pics as soon as I get it on its wheels.

Armstrong, I don't think the Tech article covers -exactly- that swap, but it covers so many different ones, and all the different ways to adapt brakes that you'll get a good idea of what has to be done and should be able to figgure out almost any brake exchange - particularly a drum brake upgrade.

Best bet is to take it apart and see if it'll work. May need to use truck backing plates...maybe not though. We're doing this on a 31 Chevy right now, it's amazing how well 50s parts fit the 30s cars.
You may need to use the 38 inner wheel bearing (or just the inner race) on the 53 hub. And make sure to use the 53 dust shields (between hub and backing plate).

Thanks Modernbeat! That is a whole bunch of info to digest. If no one comes up with the total answer I'll just take them apart, lay them out on the bench and start comparing them and try to find the right combo.
