...just kiddin guys http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
okay, here it goes... my name is Steve Caballero, born in '64 (year of the dragon), professional skateboarder for over 24 years now, been playing guitar for the punk band (the Faction since 1982), Father of a 7 year old daughter, ride dirtbikes ( CFR250R), I used to collect British MC's back in the early 90's... but all i have left now is my '59 Ariel square 4 and a '63 BSA, love art and painting and would be stoked to learn to pinstripe one day, collect toys from the 70's childhood like Evel Knievel, got interested in hotrods a while back and went to a few shows before getting one ( yes, i bought it and didn't build it) i skated all my life so i was never into working on them and building them, but from what i've seen so far from all the mags i read and the car shows i've attended seems like a super fun hobby to get into and let that creativity flow. So yes... i want to learn and i want to build something from the ground up some day and this seems like a great place to learn from and also gather up info on what's going on in this hotrod world i now have a special interest in. I brought my 1930's Ford coupe (green with bronze scallops) to the Billetproof show in Antioch, CA with my girlfriend and had a blast! I parked with the Road Zombies from San Jose becuase of a good buddy of mine, Larry Smith, is part of their car club... so this was my first showing with a rod and can't wait for the next one ( Jimmy's old car picnic in SF), but with such a hetic skateboarding schedule it's hard to find time to attend most of the shows... but i'll try! so being a newbie in " Da Scene"... can't wait to see more awesome cars, build one someday, talk and meet more awesome poeple and learn more about the car kulture you guys and gals all love and care about!
best wishes,
CAB

I don't give a fuck about celebrities, but damn dude, do you have any idea how many poeple you have inspired over the years. Nobody even THOUGHT some of the stuff you have done could be done before you did it.

I skated with you once at Upland, and probably half of the guys on this board have similar stories so you are already among friends

I don't have a clue who you are unless you played in some obscure Hair Metal band back in the day.

I bought my first hot rod (rebuilt most of the shit on it) and built my second one from scratch. If I can do it anyone can.

Desire will win over cash and know how any day.

I heard (from you guys) that he is a skater,,,

the reason I ask is, I teach woodshop... and my students are always asking if they can build a skateboard. I'd love to show them how, but I don't know where to start... I guess I'd need to make a press of some kind... that's easy, but then how do I make the male and female moulds? Where do I get the laminant? What glue do I use? What design should I use??

I built a deck in woodshop in highschool back in 1978, but it wasn't a 7ply, but more like 1 ply with a wedge for a kicktail. I don't think your shop is set up for making decks. and like he said, "i don't make them" ... i just destroy them http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Welcome to the HAMB. Good lookin model A and a fine intro. When I read you were a skater born in 64 I couldn't help flashing back to where I was in '64... flashing back now...
Met a new guy in high school who'd moved up to central Oregon from California. Called himself Hobie and he was a surfer. With no surf in the center of the state, he showed us how to build a skateboard from cast-off roller skates and a 2X6. We usta drive to the next town in his 37 chevy sedan and skate on the tennis courts. One day we found Central Oregon Community College....built on a mountain with miles of new, winding, smooth sidewalks! Steep and narrow [with pine trees] but had soft green grass to crash onto....man, I usta love "skateboarding" in the mid 60's on homemade boards!

That's cool T-man... I have had kids buy skateboard blanks... but then all they have to do is cut them out and drill the holes for the trucks... I teach at a Middle School, and we have damn near everything to build anything... and if we don't, we can buy it... soooooooooo, if anyone has any info on building decks, I'd appreciate it.

Anyway, I was then and still am a fan and always loved watching those old bones brigade videos.

Glad to see you on the HAMB, lots of other crazy skaters on here and the hot rod knowledge is plentiful. There's a fair number of freaks on here, but most of them are relatively harmless. Of course, If you end up with a rash or discharge, see a doctor.

Well being 55 years old, my first skateboard had metal wheels and was built after hearing "grab your board and go sidewalk surfin' with me" on the radio.

That said, You obviously have achieved a great deal in your chosen sport and regardless of what sport that is it takes a hell of a lot of work and dedication to rise to the top, gets my respect.

How does your skateboarding relate to what you have done to hot rodding?????

For me it was attitude. In the 80's when skating died there was a hella do-it-yourslef attitude. Close our park, so what, we'll build something, I think Stevie even skated what we built... The Farm Ramp...

Hot damn!

I grew up riding Powell-Peralta sticks and owned all the Bones Brigade videos. I even met The whole crew one time in Austin at the "Skate and Rock and Roll Expo" in 1987. I still have one Faction record but have been looking for "Dark Room" forever...finally gave up. Know where I can find a copy http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif?? Nice wheels man...welcome to the HAMB.

Welcome to the HAMB!

Sam, I built my first skateboard by hand in HS and you've never asked me how to do it! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Naw, really, as long as they don't want a concave board, it's pretty easy. And I'm not talking about the cheesey "use a wedge for a tail" trick. I'm talking about a proper tail.

If warm welcomes and cool hellos are considered ass kissing... then so be it:)

I never thought of it that way though, only becuase if you admire someone for what they do and you want to show some appreciation by saying so and how much ...it just shows you have a good heart and your not stuck thinking your the coolest dude around and your shit doesn't stink... being friendly is a good thing no matter who you are or what you've done. I'm just a dude that rode a skateboard all his life and likes hotrods, nothing more. I do appreciate all the nice things said... who wouldn't?

Anyhow I met him there and have sort of just known him for a long timei now . He rides Harleys now and knows alot of the same people I do still . Anyhow my wife works for Tod Swank at Foundation and they were doing stuff with Death Box . . . anyhow , welcome again . Nice to see the old guys are still on point . Glad to see you on the HAMB, lots of other crazy skaters on here and the hot rod knowledge is plentiful. There's a fair number of freaks on here, but most of them are relatively harmless. Of course, If you end up with a rash or discharge, see a doctor.

Cab,

What a blessing to read this post and realize that you really are who you say you are - I thought it was a prank. So thanks for signing up.

I just want to give you another welcome and tell you that you influenced me too. When I was growing up (in god forsaken Iowa!) there wasn't much to do for a bunch of kids and NO SKATING signs were popping up all over town like dandylions in a suburban lawn. A politic that I could rant on for an hour......but anyway......

Watching videos and reading "Thrasher" with my walkman playing the Dead Milkmen, Red Hot Chilli Peppers or Jane's Addiction was the kind of thing that shaped me into the person that I am. Skating, riding my bike and moto-cross were ways for me to express my feelings. I wasn't ever trying to "win" anything, I just wanted to be in that groove....so thanks for the inspiration.

To be honest I was part of the Hawk generation, so he's my #1, but you don't suck and since you signed up here you could maybe bump him... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Man this is taking me back....I used to sit in homeroom and draw all kinds of "skate" stuff. It was some of my first (and most creative) art. I probablly have drawn you or an image based on you a dozen times.

Me and my friends used to call ourselfs TFF - Team Frikkin' Frish (frish was our own word for "fresh"). And we used to make our own "News-letter" in conjunction with another local team - Team Bullwinkle. It was basically a bunch of kids playing with a xerox machine and cussing. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I did the art for it for a while. We tackled the NO SKATEBOARDS rule and freedom of expression issues....LOL. Kinda funny. I also designed the Team Bullwinkle logo - it was a silohette-skater busting a dog-pisser with a Bullwinkle head and big feet. HA HA......what a trip.

Man we were cool. We all sucked (with the exception of a handfull of us) but we had the spirit, and we never stopped trying. And if we did something stupid, we named it and called it a trick.....Fuck the rules!!!!

....now if we could only get Doug Henry........

I have a few funny skateboarding stories... one is of this old man that used to sit out on his front porch, I'd stop by to shoot the shit with him once in a while... anyway, there was a goup of kids that used to skate across the street at the school... in the same spot, day after day. Well, a number of months went by, and one day they were out there kicking their boards up in the air trying to "ollie"... each time, slamming them down on the ground... one foot on, board upside down, falling on their asses every sixth try... and Carl says with a straight face as he points to some kid who just fell on his ass...

"They're no better than the first day they started..."

Sam.

[/ QUOTE ]

I built a deck in woodshop in highschool back in 1978, but it wasn't a 7ply, but more like 1 ply with a wedge for a kicktail. I don't think your shop is set up for making decks. and like he said, "i don't make them" ... i just destroy them http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

skate and destroy!

Thats pretty funny, my dad was a carpenter so naturally i had a homemade board with a wedge kicktail, & only the old farts will appreciate what was bolted to it....green Kryptonics & ACS 651 trucks. That was around 77-78 too....nice hair & nice flares! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

How the HELL have I missed this post?? I think God could post an intro and I wouldn't be more excited! Back when I started skating (mid 80's) I was about 13, and when we skated we all pretended we were some famous skater and I always picked cab! (Well, once in a while I was the Gonz...) Wish I still had some of your old decks. (do still have a future primitive Lance, though.) Just want to say welcome. (bowing, walking backwards as I roll out the red carpet... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif ).

I can't remember the track but in the early 90's Doug Henry did the most insane jump on a downhill and was in a tortoise shell and I think broke both arms.

He was passing McGrath(team mate at the time) when he did it. McGrath let off before the jump and Henry went WFO and landed at the bottom. McGrath later commented that he did'nt know what Doug was thinking but that it was just an insane move.

How could I ever forget D. Henry after something like that.
He is an excellent rider though.

Mike Ness rules!!!!!! he's one O.G. punk rocker and he started it all back in the day for the early punk rock sounds from LA. yea, he got into some trouble with drugs and alcohol, but what rock star hasn't? the dude is sober now and he's on the right track, he's married now with an awesome son and he's still writing killer tunes and has always kept it real and alive in the music scene. people aren't perfect and most all make mistakes that they can't recover from
But Ness has really changed his ways and he's down with his family!

Mike Ness is one bad ass musicain:) and now owns a custom motorcycle shop in L.A. called Black Kat Custums.

Yessiree, the new Social Distortion cd rocks. I'm glad to finally hear something good about Mike Ness for a change...(too much shit thown at him.) Ironically, it came from someone a lot of us old skaters on this board respect. Thanks Cab.

NOW ....to repeat some of the ass kissin, The FACTION was / is one of THE BEST skate-rock bands EVER! Odd Man Out , for me was equally impressive....Showed a wider range on that one. Haven't heard anything past that...

I remember as a kid, when I was around 13 (I'm 31 now) I had one of the funniest pictures of you (from Transworld ...I think) taped on my 3 ring binder...It was a shot of you, lookin rather pissed off and givin the bird to some large, oversized bricks that were in the way of an otherwise very skateable set of brick banks in some business park...or something. I can't even remember how many times my friends and I would come across the same kind of shit....back when skateparks were pretty scarce...at least out here in Denver. Oh man ! finding good terrain back then was like finding the holy grain or something...and then to have some asshole designer put something IN THE WAY ......All I can say is CAB, you spoke for many of us in that picture...We all felt your pain http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ..If I can find it , I'll post on here. (Transworld always had some great photography)

Anyway, glad to have you around Cab!

Vagrant,
thanks for the welcome:)
Yes... the Faction still lives, we have a show in Scotland next weekend so the band is hyped to be flown over to Aberdeen for a few days to play. I'm also going there to open up a new skatepark and do a demo there, should be a fun short trip.

After Odd Man Out, came the bands... Shovelhead and Soda. We started up with the Faction again in 2000. we don't play out very much, only on special occasions.

...that place is was flipping off back in the day was a skate spot called "the Bricks" that they had just ruined and made un-skateable was located in downtown San Jose... we were bummed:(

Super cool bands - all of 'em. Me likey. I was so excited that you joined the board that I have been playing as you on X-Box for a couple of weeks now - and I still suck.....

BTW, Doug Henry is a ruler because he could have quit ANY TIME after breaking his back not once but TWICE and breaking BOTH ARMS!!!! And those are just three injuries in a looooong career. To top THAT off he went on to win the Outdoor Nationals AFTER all of those wrecks.....A lot of people were on the McGrath bandwagon (rightly so - he kicks ass) but I was a steadfast Henry fan. He rode for the true love of riding when most would have been riding a lawnchair in the pits after the FIRST back-breaker...... And he still rides for fun on his own time even now.

That's SKATE OR DIE mentality if ever there was such a thing......

Wow, ..the Faction in Scotland...Damn that's cool..Good luck with that hope it goes well.

I did a search in Google and Amazon.com for Soda and Shovelhead...found a tiny bit on shovelhead. (And a small review of a Caballero Mixology cd...something like that..Describes Soda as a fast version of Sixpence...Interesting.)
What label are those bands on ?

Cab, welcome to the the HAMB. You have a lot of admirers.
You were born in '64? I had a skate board in '64. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Did/do you know a skater by the last name of Yandell(sp)? He was pretty hot in the '70s and lived in Calif.
He has a brother named Pat and I use to play in a band with Pat. He was an awesome guitarist at 16 years old!
Nice coupe, and again, welcome.

You're probably thinking of Chris Yandell, he rode for G&S and Tracker in the 70's, I think he may have designed the G&S YoYo wheel, or I have it stuck in my head for some reason... His Who's Hot was around the summer of 76.... I think I retain soem useless knowledge sometimes, then someone mentions something like this and bam....
