did buick offer any different oil pan designs for the 401? and does any other nailhead oil pan fit the 401? im puttin' a 401 in a '54 buick and im having trouble with the pan hitting the steering. the "hump" on my pan on the 401 is in the middle. on the 322 it is in the rear. if worst comes to worst i will cut the two oil pans up to make it work...

Yes, and yes. 59-60 had rear sump, other years possible rear sump. I should know, I'm runnin one. 364 oilpan will fit 401. Someone told me that the oilpumps for later 401s are different than the early 401s, so I'd snag the pump, pickup, and pan, all 3.

Too bad we scared off Ironhunter, he'd know that answer.

Try PMing him nailhead_rikter.

I don't think we've scared Ironhunter off. He's been absent from the Nailhead list as well. Probably just really busy.

But you can use a rear sump pan from a 364 on a 401, though I believe a couple of early 401's had rear sump as well.

As I understand it (I just finished a 425 buildup) 401 and 425 pans are the same; so say 61-66. The 65/66 Grand sports had a rear sump pan. That's what I used. HOWEVER, only a rear sump oil pickup tube for the GS will work, and they are HARD TO FIND. There's a guy in the Northeast who makes 'em new for this application. His name is Carmen Faseo phone # is 716-693-4090. He is THE nailhead parts guru. Give him a call.
