View Full Version : dropped axle kingpin questions.

Excuse the greenhorn question here, Trying to set up my new dropped axle today, Im using 40 spindles and kingpins which seemed to be fairly snug in the old axle, problem is, they wont fit in the new axle,not off by much I guess, but enough that you couldnt hammer them in. Is is normal to have to hone or ream a new Axle for fit. I know its necessary to do spindle bushings, but wasnt sure about the axle needing it too? I figured these would fall in, being used kingpins and all.

yeah I think every axle has to be honed out. Mine did...

I used a superbell and didn't have to do anything with it. I put the bushing in the spindles and honed them.
Maybe I got lucky with mine.

did you get paint in the axle where the kingpin goes? that could be making it a tight fit.

As far as I know all new kingpins have to be fit by a machine shop

Is it a NEW axle? Or is it a newly dropped axle? It's possible that the holes could be distorted when dropping an old axle.A new axle,like Superbell etc,should be the right size.I would suggest you measure the holes and pins with a vernier caliper.Definately shouldn't have to hammer them in.

In addition to Ian's question, What year is the axle supposed to be for?

King pin diameters increased in size after Model A's; so if your using '40 spindles and pins with a model A axle; that might be the reason they don't fit the axle.

Normally the axle kingpin hole should not need to be bored. But it should be a "palm push" fit.

Yes, Its a new superbell chrome I-beam, expected to be able to push them in. Havent noticed the axles having different kingpin bore sizes? Maybe its tight because it was chromed?

New king pins and spindle bushings DO need to be fit. The pin hole in the axle shouldn't need any fitting.

You can do your own fitting (reaming) of the bushings if you have one of Fords reamers; I have one, but your a little far away from me!

THAT will cause the pin not to fit!

A wrist pin (piston) hone can take care of the problem.

yes,it's the chrome......i've had to hone chrome superbells to make the king pins fit. FYI....all ford axles have the same kingpin bore (.8315)....the kingpins themselfs are different for various year spindles. you use the king pins for the year of spindles

363w, sure that aint 0.8125??? I thot they were 13/16"?? sometimes written as .813???
I'm sure I used a 13/16" reamer in the past.

Your right; I was thinking about Model "T's"; helping restore one and my reamer wouldn't work.

Yes, Mart, just found an old reamer that was made back "in the day" and it says 13/16- For A,B, and V8 Ford and Mercury. I'm all set. Thanks

A red pubic hair is thicker than a brunette pubic hair and a blonde pube is the thinnest. After much research I have found that many redheads and blondes do in fact have brunette pubes. This leads me to beleive that when something is a cunt hair off it usually means (statistically) that it is a brunette hair off.
