My `63 Riv has been acting funny latly ... Ran like a champ when I got it , but after 5 months of daily use , it has started shakin`its tail like an elderly street Ho http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Pulled the rear axels this evening , and I cant seem to figger out whats happend`here .
Take a look at the pix , and please tell me what you think.
Looks like "Locktight" to me , but I might be wrong ..

...
i had the exact same situation on my previous riviera, the axle tube was shot. the axle really needed to be replaced, i went thru a few rear bearings in the few year i drive it. it's real fun when your axle catches fire!

I dunno...looks like factory bearing setting stuff to me--to help keep the race from rotating in the housing. If the bearing is smooth and quieet in it's operation don't sweat it. If it's rough and noisy, replace it.
I'd be looking rreeeeaaal close at the panhard bar bushings and/or the control arm bushings..and check tire pressures too.
you could try a "go for broke" fix and reinstall it with a fresh bearing, and a sresh spear...of JB weld. good chance it'll last so long you forget to find a replacement.

THANX http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif The panhard bar bushings was shot , so I replaced them , but the problem was still there. There have been no noise from the bearings , but with the car running on Jack-stands , I could see that both wheels and drums was out of ballance. All wheel studs on left side rotated whe I tried to remove the wheel http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif ( actually had to cut the wheel loose )

Uhhhhhhhhhhh, you are aware the studs and lugnuts on the left side of the car are left-hand thread---right? That's what the little "L" is for on the end of each stud.
Bahhhhh, I'm sure you already knew that, right?

Actually isn't it the ones on the right side of the car that have the left hand threads?

Gee, Rocky, I don't want to start anything but I always thought the ones on the right side had the left hand threads. I know this has already been stated but can two HAMBr's be wrong? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

i coulda swore it was left on the right side, but it's been since i was a teenager since i dealt with any cars that still had lefties on em. my memory ain't so hot! though, the riv i picked up this year had left hand studs, on the left, but they were new, i have the reciept for new wheel studs.
