Steering Box ??'s-'48 F series a good choice???

As my parts gathering goes for my Modified project, I have gathered a fair amount of parts. I grabbed the rear I spoke of which is a Model A piece, I have a full set of backing plates attached to '38 8 lug wheels, a clutch brake pedal assebly and master cylionder from an F-2 chassis.
Now, I tried to get the steering box and damned thing is loose and dangling but I just cannot work it off.
My questions are will it be a good choice for my roadster and how do I get the damned thing loosened from the couplers( you know the u-joint looking thingamabobs attached to the steering shaft) coming out of the fire wall?

There is no thingabob holding the shaft to the box at the firewall. The clamp holds the column to the box but the shaft is one piece right up to the steering wheel! You need to pull the wheel and remove the box with the steering shaft attached.
Not sure if the column can come out with the mainshaft but the steering wheel won't! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Bill's got the info for you. The column tube covers the shaft and it is pressed into the worm gear and runs solid up to the steering wheel. The clamp will release it from the box, but you still can't get the box free. You have to take the whole unit - box and shaft together.

Since you have the pedals out, I guess you've already removed all those sheet metal plates that fit around the pedals and column. Easy to lift the box/column right out thru the cab IF you pulled the steering wheel first. Probably can still do it, but it'll be close.

The Gemmer 3 steering box out of the F1 - F3's is one of the best you can nab for your project.

There was just a discussion on Fordbarn about shortening a F1 column and shaft - good info.

Thanx guys. I did not know the whole thing from box to column was one piece. It is coming out of a make shift tractor of some sorts, so I did not have to hassle with the sheetmetal and all.
Damn, I thought that the shaft came out of the box and I could use a different column with it. I was beating on the thing trying to knox it loose and everything!
