I'm rebuilding my '39 Chevy sedan and it's gonna be in the gasser vein. I've got a Nova subframe at the moment but I'm gonna wack it off and do a straight axle instead. I should have done this in the first place but I'm a little slow. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So I'm on the lookout for a straight axle, don't care if it's new/old/repro or other.

Also looking for a cheap big block Chevy(I realise that's nearly impossible but what the hell). Gonna have a big ass tunnel ram and yes it won't be as good as a single four barrel but I don't care. Gotta have fun! So I'm guess I'm looking for a cheap tunnel ram too!

Gassers are forever. Donations accepted.

I'll bet you can get a tall-deck 366 for scrapmetal prices.

I know that Speedway Motors advertises a gasser axle kit that they have. Check them out at www.speedwaymotors.com (http://www.speedwaymotors.com)

Get the kit from Speedway. Rather then removing the subframe, after you get the kit, see if you can use the kit with the subframe. Just remove all the original suspension parts first and you should be able to weld the Speedway brackets to the subframe.

Here's the direct link to the kit: Speedway (http://www.speedwaymotors.com/product.asp?base%5Fno=91639031&mscssid=GLR6JU01MWN T9LJ5GW4M61LK9EFQ9SD2)

I got one just like that but totally straight across, how high do you want to go?

I also think 60's Econoline axles are pretty much straight without much drop in them? Econolines have parallel leafs as well. Grab the whole set-up out of the junkyard axle, leafs, spindles and brakes

M.A.S Racing Products in Minnesota has a set up they call "The Duece" it is $299 with axle, springs, shackles, mounting brackets, u-bolts and spring pads. Axles available for 28-48 Ford, 49-54 Chevy or 60-66 Econoline spindles and in 0, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 inch drops. Nothing against Speedway but that is WAY more spindle and drop choices than they offer. Their number is: 651-644-6811

I used the Speedway axle, springs, spindles and steering arms on my Willys Gasser ....rides and handles great.
Oh, I also used the vega cross steer box.....

The Econoline is not straight across. It's got about a 2.5-3" drop. The leafs are VERY LONG. If you go with an Econoline, you'll need springs anyway.

The Econoline springs are something like 50" long. I could measure mine, but it's raining. The reason I got the Speedway springs is because the Econoline springs were as long as they are. But you do get the spindles/brakes etc., with that. It's still worth it.

You could've gotten the Speedway bracket kit and springs only, no axle, if you got an Econoline axle, but as far as I know - what Speedway told me - I got the last bracket kit and they're not making more. The fact is though, that for the $75 or so, that that kit cost, you could make your own brackets. Then you'd only need springs.

I used a 48-52 F-1 axle from a Ford truck on this car...the width was more better... I have two Econoline axles....they are too wide for anything except for say.......55-57 Fords and 55-57 Chevys http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I would look for an axle off a 47-54 Chevy truck...they are pretty cheap in these parts.....don't know about your neighborhood though... they are easily converted to Chevy pass bolt pattern with a change of the bearings...

If you find a donor truck...take everything off, including the spring perch mounts......they are handy to have on hand.......

But I like the MAS and Speedway kits.......can't beat 'em for simplicity......unless you're too cheap to buy one......like myself http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

But...the money I saved from having to buy a MAS or Speedway....I used to chrome my F-1 axle.......and you can have the hubs drilled out for a small Ford pattern...

You could also consider using a Ford I beam from a 32-48 Ford and mount the transverse spring on top, find yourself a 40 Ford truck front crossmember, they are deeper (lower) I believe.

I have a crossmember from a 40 Ford, and it looks deeper then the others I pulled out of 38-40 Fords cars. Buy a couple of hairpins.....or make your own... and Pooof!!!....you got a high riding tire fryer......

Can you use a 56 chev truck axel under a 55 chevy car ?

I don't see why not.....I have a 57 Chevy truck...and after carefully looking over the set-up....I contemplated it's use under my 57 Chevy Wagon.......it looks like it would work.........you would just have to figure out steering....which you would have to do no matter what axle you choose.......but keep in mind that that Chevy truck axle is likely 6 bolt hole pattern...you would have to buy a disc brake or drum conversion kit for the Chevy small five...

I'm using that set-up in my '56 and am going to have the drums and hubs drilled for a chevy 5-bolt.

Just make sure you get the longer 36" inch (I think) springs as they will give you a much more stable ride.

What about steering? I saw someone mentioned the Vega box. Anything else?

Also what other spindles will fit the Speedway kits?

I suggest using all of the parts from Speedway as I stated before, so you eliminate issues of swapping items that don't work with one another, and in the long run you'll save yourself money and headaches.

The only problem with Speedway parts from what I was told is that the axle is a tube axle and might not be strong enough for the larger cars (55-57 Chevy's, etc.)

DOH!

I just put a Speedway axle under the front of my car! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Is there any truth to the axle not being strong enough to hold up under the weight of larger cars? My fairlane probably weighs in at around 3000lbs.

OH HELL, this is all I need is for this axle to be too weak. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Now I'm worried....

O.k.
Ya'll got me worried, so I called up Speedway and asked about the strength of thier kit.
The guy I talked to said that it would hold up under a 55 Chevy. As a matter of fact that is what the kit is for. He said as long as I'm not planning on doing any BIG BLOCK WHEELSTANDS.

So there you have it. Speedway says their kit will work for the larger cars.

BTW...I figure a big block wheelstand would be rough on any equiptment....

I was just passing info that I heard. I'm glad you checked with Speedway on it. I was going to use a Speedway Axle myself, but I ended up getting a good deal on a '49-54 Chevy Truck axle, springs and spindles.

I have a '55 Ford 100 axle sitting in my garage. It was removed because the owner went to IFS on the truck.

It has modern 12" disc brakes on it, and some kind of adapters to use the "big" original F100 wheel lug pattern. Could be modified to fit 5x4.5" pattern if you want.

Make me an offer if you're interested. It's in Ft Worth TX, and is heavy as hell, so I wouldn't recommend shipping it. Can send pictures if interested.

I think they sell a complete kit now, but you should try looking for a mid sixties econoline. they had the best straight axle set ups

I have a customer who put his own Speedway Staight Axle Kit on a 57 Chevy all steel w/ an all steel blown 392 Hemi. No axle flex what so ever. Runs down the road like a dream, I've driven it myself. So much for everybody bad mouthing Speedway about using cheap metal.

Ask [wilnov] with the red nova about speedway axel he bent his on a 60 foot long 4 to 5 foot high wheelstand thats the only time they get bent. So keep the wheels on the ground and there fine.
