"Im not very close so Im not too worried. "

You're a cock.

That said, I listened to NPR on my way in this morning. At this point, they're not too concerned. Normally, when an angry mountain pops its top, there's pre-gas emitted. Sulphur and all sorts of stuff that's easily measured. They're not seeing any of that.

Worst case scenario (or so "they" say): light eruption w/ oozing lava, rather than the big kaboom and a huge ash cloud.

My real concern is Mt. Ranier, which is well over due to pop. When that thing goes we're all sorts of screwed.

yeah, we don't have huricanes weekly

we have the rare piroclasic flows and the occasional lahar.

where I live the entire area is made of volcanic material.

the towns in this area just did their siren tests,

should the big one go,

the siren goes off, you bend over and kiss your ass good by.

the mountain is basicly just a giant pile of ice and ash,

not what you want to make mountains out of..

I don't think it could possibly be as big as the last eruption. The mountain top is missing. I bet the news in other states makes it sound like we are done for though.

When Rainier goes we are screwed! Its big and mean and there is no way out. We will have to head up to Canada.

If it really blows again it might cause some disruption, but nothing I've heard leads me to expect any trouble. Of course its 100 miles south of me...

They are not expecting anything that would endanger anyone not on the mountain. People should stay off the mountain until it settles down and everyone will be fine.

Local news here in Oregon was stating that if it were to go, the ash would blow to the south/west, over Portland on its way to the coast. Last time the ash caused problems were enought for me...H

the news I seen it on said the hiking trails on the mountain are closed and there is earthquake activity every couple minutes under the mountain and its venting, I know nothing about a volcano but it did sound fairly serious, we got loads of ash from the last time she blew to and I'm 600 or so miles away

I still swear the ash ruined my old 261 I had at the time with no air cleaner http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Gotta stock up on those little bottles so you can make a killing selling "Genuine MOUNT ST. HELENS ASH" for a buck a bottle like the last time. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

They were even more popular than the "Moose Turd earrings" and "Elk seeds" in Montana gift shops for a while... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm to the south just outside Portland. I can see the mountain from my deck, so I'll have a view of it if it goes. Just a bunch of little earthquakes so far. The last time it blew, I was living in Puyallup AND I was traveling on I-5 at the time. State troopers had semi's travel side by side at 10-15mph thru the blowing ash to keep everyone slowed down. That was a looong trip home.

I was here in Portland when it blew last time. What a mess. And they were saying the same thing. Oh it is nothing to worry about. Yeah we'll see.
Now Rainier that is another story that would be terrible. But Hood just to the east of us is over due also. Hmmmm no wonder they call the Pacific Rim the Rim OF Fire.

Mt Spurr is a little west/south west of Anchorage. It was shakin and rumblin about 6 weeks ago, we were keeping a close eye on it as it would have a big effect on the Air Taxi operations in Anc and Kenai/Homer. Gets to dusty, I cant fly, Pisses off the hunters/fisherman when you cant fly them out or fly them back. Several active Volcanos in Alaska, especially down the chain. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Hmmm. My memory of last time was they were saying it was going to blow and blow big, and they were working hard to evacuate people off the mountain. Most those who died on the mountain were those who refused to leave and those who thought science was more important than safety.

And it did make a huge mess.

I was safely in Idaho that Sunday morning, but my life then required being all over Oregon and Washington. I only missed being in the ash drop zone by a few days. I did loose a motorcycle chain because of ash on a trip through Washington a few weeks later.

When Spurr Blew its top up here in 92 it was unreal looked like grey snow I have a bag of the ash somewheres. I also have a couple of pictures of the next day at the airport where they was sweeping the runways it was truly unreal It just got dark and dim there was about 3 to 4 inches of ash in some places here. If I ever get this new scanner figured out I will try and post a few pictures.
