View Full Version : How did you solve this?
Well I just spent two days hacking up a Dodge Caravan seat to fit in my coupe with a 6 inch channel - no chop. I did every goddam thing under the sun to get this seat down low enough to get some head clearance..
I cant be the only guy with this problem...so I gotta ask.
1 What seat did you use?
2 how much head clearace do you have?
3 Is your sitting position comfortable?
4 Does your seat adjust forward and back?
5 Got a picture?
Theres either sumpin I'm overlooking or theres a helluvalot of uncomfortable rods out there ...

You hit the nail on the head.
If you want comfort, get a Lazy Boy recliner.

Screw the tracks, bolt it to the floor, leave enough height
so the springs don't bottom out on the floor.

Did you try any other seats? I got some seats out of some import that are really really low but still have the tracks and i got enough head clearence in a chopped/channeled 32. Im short but if yours aint chopped it might be enough.

Yes, there are a lot of cars that are TOO DAMM LOW! Guys seem to forget you can chop the top and channel it to death but people are still the same size and shape. I'm not double jointed, I want to actualy FIT in my car. I don't like 'em wacked to nothin. My minds made up so fire away!
Yeah, I want this to be a DRIVER, and if I have to be a circus act to get in and out and have a kinked up back everytime I drive, It aint worth it !!! I know there has to be some compromises made here, but I wanna take it for 200 mile drives.. Right now I have 1 1/2 in. of head clearance.
I'll try tilting the seat back a bit more tomorrow and see if that helps. Keep those suggestions coming The car isnt real radical so it should be possible http://people.montana.com/~kaparich/Side.jpg

My 33 ford pu cab was channelled 5" and chopped 5.5". I'm 5'9"...I set up my seat before I ever chopped the top to avoid the very problem you're having. My seat was some kinda ford van 3rd seat I found next to a dumpster. Yeah, it hadda tunafish smell when the weather was hot but ti was CHEAP! I removed all traces of mounting garabage and sat it on the floor, flat against the back of the cab... It had only foam--no pesky springs. It rode just fine until the foam compressed under my 200 lb ass...took about an hour and a half before I began to think about calling 911 to meet me somewhere and help me get out.....
One hour trips were great! WTF? At my age, I can't go over an hour withour pissin anyway....

Been there, done that! 31 coupe,6 inch channel,3 inch top chop.
I bought a Dodge Caravan seat on advice from someone http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gifand could not get it to work,no way no how.
So took it out and put it in my 29 roadster truck..fit like a glove in it!
I'm trying a 67 Thunderbird wrap around back seat now,may work.
If any of you guys know of something better PLEASE help us out!
I'm using seats out of a 914. very thin and not the most comfortable, but they work.
my car is chopped, channeled and sectioned.
Rocky - I had the same problem with a foam over plywood seat in my roadster. I solved it with a hemorrhoid donut that was inflatable. I cut the foam to fit the donut and had the valve exit the rear of the seat, where I could adjust it with air from a station. It was heavier than a innertube, which would also work. Long trips became fun again...

Corvett seat's? The motorcycle seat maker Corbin has developed a 'jell' insert for added cushion. Try looking at the small, older Euro sport's car's for idea's: Triumph's, Fiat, MG's ect.

I'm 6'4" and I used the same seat in a 3" chopped 32 ford coupe,,,,,threw the tracks away and bolted it to the floor with homemade brackets that had the right(for me only)front to back slant.Worked great.
Sorry no picture cars been gone for a few years now.HRP

This may sound doofy, but I've noticed a lot of channeld cars have the floor running on top of the frame rails. I'm tall, and in my head I've designed a little Track T for "some day" after I get all the parts. In my plan, the floor is dropped down over the frame rail for an added few inches of ass clearance. The floor pan will be even with the bottom of the frame rail. That'll make the trans/driveshaft tunnel higher, but so what?
In my head, the frame rail bows out to match the contour of the body along the rocker panel, too, rather than 6 inches into the middle of the floor.
You look pretty far along for this idea, but someone else reading this might get an idea.

I thought about using a rearseat from a fox body mustang. The base is almost all foam with a metal support and the seat backs fold down. I havent tried it though.
I like the idea of the inflatable ass gasket but that's only half of it,
sitting hunched over so you can see traffic lights is tough on the back too,
and now with the tunnel ram going on I'll prolly end up with a permanantly crooked neck.
anybody know a good neck, spine and ass doctor? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
