The local autoparts store said they could not turn an pair of original 40 Ford front drums be cause they were steel not cast.
Never heard or this - what do you think a bullshit line or?

I've never seen a steel one--I guess they could exist. Look at it and tell us--Is it cast?

They would have to re-dress the tool bit to cut steel, tool bit needs to be "sharper" on steel...... just lazy I guess.

BS.
I just had all 4 of my drums turned on my 41 P/U. 41 pickups have 40 Ford frames and running gear.
The only problem the brake shop had (and me too at home) was getting the drums separated from the spindle mounts. Lots of rust.

Were they ONE PIECE drums? (spindle bearing housing integeral with the drum)
Early Ford brake drums weren't made from steel.
Think the shop just used some "pull the wool over his eyes" BS because they didn't have the right early drum mount.

Original Model A drums were in fact steel and not cast iron but I doubt that they were steel as late as 40. If in fact they are steel and not cast iron then the best thing to do is to not use 'em. Steel drums are considered by most to be inferior to cast iron and at least for Model As repro drums are only offered in cast iron.

They are not one piece. The drums separate from the spindle bearing housing.

I ran them over to a good old brake shop and he just laughed as he turned them right up for me. Looks like the parts house didn't know what to do with them so made up some shit.
Steel vs cast - what a line of BS!
Always pays to deal with the right people!

Brett, go over to the origional shop and tell them they were wrong. Say the second shop said they were aluminum and used a wood tool bit and turned them with no problem. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
