Where can I find a 12V generator suitable for using on my 49 8BA?

Good question, I'd like to find one for my inline 6 Chevy...

Take it to a "Starter / Generator" Rebuild shop. They can convert them. (get a new 12 v reg. from them too)

Just replace the main body(and field windings) on your 6V generator with a 12V Ford generator body from the 50s-60s. I used a generator body from a 64 Fairlane.
You'll need to drill a hole for the end plate dowel. You'll also need to drill a hole in the side for the 8BA generator bracket locator pin. Measure off the old generator so your belts will line up. Reuse the 6V end plate. It cost me zero dollars and it has been charging just fine for 7 years now.

Swapped to the later case/coils just last night. Actually just swapped the endplates from the flathead gen. onto the later Ford gen. to get rid of the mounting tabs but that was purely esthetic - could have just left them or cut them off but I already had the old pieces. Drilled the locating hole 1 1/2" from the edge of the case and was done. Took about fifteen/twenty minutes.

Most any generator after about '56 (Ford) should work for the conversion parts. Of note, you may have a very early generator - I found many of the 12V generators were significantly longer than the one on my '40. Just something to watch for...

Ernie I got these 12V/130W Bosch generators here. They are NOS and just need a good clean up due to the long storage. They come with out pulley and Voltage regulator and fit pre 8BA engines. I sell them for € 135.- a piece. Just in case some one need one. Sorry that I don't have a better pic, maybe tomorrow. http://www.oldhotrodparts.de/forum/motor.jpg

130W!! Holy cow - I could light a small city with that much power! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Better yet, I could run power windows, a big stereo, neon kit, and air conditioning while keeping a gennie so it all looks right! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
You know, I've got a PM-7 for my '40 - it appears your generator works just fine with a PM-7 - I will keep that in mind! You anywhere near Stuttgart by chance?

Yes it fits the PM7 and Tatterfields perfect, also the Hexagon and some others with the carbs set back like the ugly Edmunds. I'm far east close to Berlin, but got a few buddies down in Stuttgart. Wouldn't be a big prom to get the thing down there for pick up. Just let me know when you need one, I have a few left.

Thanks for all the info. How ever I have no gen. or bracket to work with. Should I get a 6V and bracket and convert it or is there a 12V that looks close enough to the 6V that I could use that and get away with still looking right?

Just get any base level (lowest amps, if they ask you to make a choice) Ford generator from '56 through roughly 1963. Fits right into the 49 cradle, only substantial difference in appearance is three mounting tabs that can easily be ground off. There is a locating pin in the bracket--drill for it as Grimlock did or just yank it and be careful locating and tightening down the strap. Done.

I did a 12V conversion on my former 51 Shoebox. Used an early 60's Ford 12V generator. It fit just fine using the stock mount, like Bruce said.
You can go the rewiring route, but just buying the 12V 60s generator was easy.
