View Full Version : Speaking of Westergard Customs, I've got a Hubcap Question??

I picked up a pair of 16x4 1940 Ford style wheels that had hubcaps on them.
They look like these, but have no flipper bar. The plating is shot on them.

Can anybody give me a little info on them? Are they worth anything being that they need to be replated?
Thanks,

No, the caps I got use the inside clips like a 40-48 hubcap, but cover the entire center of the wheel. You can't even see the four slots aound the rim.
I think I have heard these caps referred to as Hollywood Flippers? Maybe mine are just Hollywoods?

I believe the caps in the pic and the ones seen commonly on the Westergard cars, are accessory caps for the wide-5, 1936-1939, ford bolt pattern. They are rare.

I always thought those caps were only for the wide 5 wheels also...until I got these.
They look just like the one pictured though, with the two ribs around the outside, just no flipper bar.

I believe there was more than one manufacturer. I've seen several different types. The thing I notice is the number and the size of the beads at the edge of the cap. Some have 2 beads. some have 3. Probably copys of the hot new hub cap at that time. They are pretty rare around here. They were probably available with or without the flipper but I haven't seen any without the flipper. They were made for several applications including 40-48 Fords. The ones I've found were for oddball applications. I weld an old Ford cap backing into the flipper backing.

Thanks for the info, Tommy.
I see on the bottom of the ad you poated...with bars $17.50, without bars $15.00. So I guess they offered them both ways.
Would you mind emailing that ad to me? I can't read it real well as you posted it.
Thanks,
Neal

Ain't it amazing what you can learn if you read the ad? I hadn't looked at the ad in a long while. From now on check out the beads on the ones you see. It's surprising how many different variations there are.

I looked last night in the Barris book Vol 1, and it starts with a few pics of Westgard since that was the first place he did anything. He called them ripple caps on his own ride.
