I was assembling the 283 that is going into the digger tonight... I started with piston #1, put it in... and when I went to put #3 in, I noticed some crap on the rod bolt. So I thought "if there is crap on #3's rod bolt, there might be crap on #1's rod bolt. Now I use those little rubber caps on the rod bolts when I assemble motors... but just to check #1, I un-did the cap, and when I rotated the the cranl around to look at #1's bolts, it must have whacked the crank. Well, I didn't see any crap, but then I put the cap back on, rotated the crank and when I went to wiggle the rod back and forth on the journal, I noticed that it would not move side to side... I immediately knew something was wrong. I pulled the cap and the nick that the rod had put in the crank had made a groove in the bearing.
Maybe this is the engine gods way of telling me we need a forged crank.
Soooooo... anyone have a good used 283 forged crank lying around? There are issues beyond this cranks new nick that I want to solve by replacing it...
Anyone?
Sam.

I have two 283 cranks laying around but how do I tell if theyre forged? You can have them.

Look at the parting line for the crank. If it is about 3/8 inch wide and looks ground off to make approximately smooth, it is a forging. If it has a thin line that is pretty sharp, about 1/16 inch wide, it is cast.

OK I'll check when I get home tonight... I know one crank was already done (looks brand new) but if they're forged or whatever... you can have them. I don't know when I am going to the Bay Area again, though.

i'll let it go for (relatively) cheap or trade.

Alteredpilot, is it a re-man assembly or does it need to be gone through?
I may have answered my own question... the crank I nicked is a standard crank that has seen 6500rpm reliably for years and still looks pretty good. Teh guy at the local machine shop, who is a drag racer, has given us a break on a few things and said he'd grind it and give us new bearings for $100... this is after all an interim motor. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Anyone else ever find themselves spending $100 here and $100 there and next thing you know you got $1000 in what was supposed to be a low buck deal? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I know I have,

OK Sam...
Sorry it's so late but here I am (I worked 15 hours today)...
Both of the 283 cranks are forged... one obviously needs to be checked out... the other is pretty nice as is. Want them? And if so, how do we hook up?
