i have a transmission that is mounted to a 59 caddie motor... i can't figure out what kind of transmission it is. it is stamped with a hydromatic plate that reads 053-2c314x and the casting numbers on the trans, are stamped CFD-9-8614721

i have been looking for a starter for it, for quite some time but can't find a match. the starter bolts to the bell housing on the passenger side and bolts through the nose cone into the threaded bellhousing, rather than motor. it seems to in no way bolt to the engine. hence the problem, i have no idea what hydro-matic trans it is.

i have ordered a couple of different caddie starters for 59 and 60 but non of them fit.

somebody told me olds trans are interchangeable same years but i haven't verified that...

any wisdom? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

First, does the tranny have a cast iron case? And does it have a sheetmetal pan on the drivers side with the shift linkage protruding through it? If so, it's an early Hydro. And if the prefix on the data plate is O53 and not zero-53 that would indicate it's from a 53 Olds.

Maybe.....

aluminum case... and your right about the shift linkage protruding through a "sheetmetal lookingt pan"

warbird,
the way you described it...sounds like you might have one... is yours a 53 olds?

also forgot to mention that the fly wheel has about 40 hexhead bolts that attatch it to the torque converter... another pain in the butt detail http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Early hydro's all have a cast iron case, heavier than heck but it was the best automatic made at the time. A whole boatload of bolts holding the torus cover to the torus housing is correct for an early hydro, however. So I don't know exactly what you've got there. A picture would help identify it. Mine is about a '50 Cad tranny (don't know for sure because some rebuilder replaced the data plate with his own at somepoint in the distant past) bolted up to a '55 motor.
