I use Sharpies around my office and shop quite a bit. I've found that sometimes, when marking dark metal surfaces, they don't quite cut the mustard and there are times when soap stone doesn't work well either, like on dark painted surfaces.

The last time I bought a pack of 5 black Sharpies, they included a metallic silver Sharpie. Works great on dark surfaces. Another cheap tool for the tool box.

And they NEVER run out...

now.... if we can just get the people over at Sharpie to make ink refil cartridges for my Epson printer, the world would be a better place! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And even though it's been said before, if you store your sharpie's with the tip down, you'll get more life out of'em.

Ya they work great, but everytime I take a day off from work, I come back and all of them are missing, I just brought 3 new ones and a week later I took a day off and they were all gone when I got back.

Great site, Action Girl.

When doing sheetmetal work, Sharpies are better than scribers because they don't cause any stresses that could cause cracks later.

My problem with em is that they turn into not so sharpies after a while http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

anyone who has ever lost a sharpie should have one of these.. one of the BEST ideas I have ever seen.. its called a kwik draw holder. clips to your belt and holds your sharpie the cool thing is you never need to hunt down a cap again.. heres a pic..

you better push that cap on the rest of the way, or you'll run out of sharpie pretty fast http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

We talked about Sharpies a while back.
I'd used em to outline some scallops on a red oxide primer surface.
The painters in our group pointed out that you can't get rid of the Sharpie lines well enough so that they don't show after paint is applied.

I use em on bare metal as well, but when I get to it the metal is hit with a Pearl Wheel (flap disc) and taken down to a fresh surface so as to avoid the Sharpie bleed-through in the paint.

While you're at the stationery store, grab a bottle of white typewriter correcting fluid, the kind with a built-in brush. Now you can make white marks, too. The stuff is thick and will even go over some crud.
I use this to make things readable in bad light, like in measuring steering parts under cars at the junkyard. I cover the scale on a caliper, say, in the area of the dimension I need with whiteout and mark the exact dimension with a sharpy track across that--now I just need to align the big bold mark and not read a blur of little lines in the dark. Also good with timing marks and such on your friend's non rod filthy cluttered engine compartments.
When you're done, just scrape it off with your fingernail or give it a shot of spray carb cleaner.
