So my friend Jeff is building this 59 Chevy I found.Heres about 95% of everyones Kustom Ideas for it.."Oh man,you should drop it in the weeds, throw some astros on it,pinner whites and maybe some Bellflowers on it..it would be the shit!!" http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Astros look cool and all.. But if you look in the old R&C little pages circa 59-62 You dont seem to see too many cars done like that.Chrome reversed, wide whites, dump tubes, and a good ole fashion red paint job is the look for us. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

anything but skylark wires or tru spokes(gotta keep the comp. down for a set)haha. if you and or he don't own Southard's book Hot Rods & Customs of the 60s go by it now. you'll get to much influence from it. simple could be deep red metallic body with appliance white roof with abalone flake in it. chrome reverse with skinnies. and i do think a set of scavenger pipes. haha. make it look like an early 60s mild custom that influenced the mid 60s mild customs. a vein that doesn't get tapped much but is cool. or take a later model bomba approach and do a dead on resto to the nines but bag it and set it on the ground. either could be cool but then again thats a car that could be built a million ways a still be nice. flame red witha white top is way to familiar avoid it like the well something you'd avoid...ken....

hhhmmmmm,
i had always heard the shorty version of lake pipes refered to a scavenger pipes is this wrong if so what were they really known as. originality and simplicity can go hand in hand and the less is more approach can speak volumes sometimes. a few simple can set a car apart from a sea of similar rides quickly...ken....

hahaha..he wont mind if the cost is ummmmmm FREE!!! hahaha.. I though thats what you meant when you said scavengers, just wanted to see what you meant.Offenhauser used to make some pipes like that that were flared and used for either injector stacks or pipes.I want to run those on the back of my Jimmy like three per side, since there is three exhaust ports on a Cadillac head. You dont see it that much, you're right and thats what my reasoning for doing it was.Now look what weve done!! you're gonna start seeing them now!! Just like when i threw a Cad in my Jimmy in 97..Yeah no one runs Cads anymore..fast forward 7 years..uggh!!!!!!

donnie,
ha. i guess it's true that great minds think alike. thats one of those cars you could go really simple on yet make it really stand out if you just pulled a few old tricks that don't get used much these days. i'd also say "colorchrome" the wheels inside the lug area(in the inner ring of the wheel) with the same wineish deep red of the body. damn it there's one of these cars for sale near me and now thats all i'm gonna think about for a week. good thing i'm broke i guess. damn wisdom teeth(5 more days)...ken....

[/ QUOTE ]well damn shame we gotta bring up the past, cuz thats where we lived, but i remember putting alot of straight scavenger pipes on down at my buddie's father's texaco, and working after hours to use the hoist and jacking the rear with chrome shackles, and of course you gotta paint the wheel wells a light white and pink mixture to have the "look" http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What's a "Pinner Whites"? Never heard that term... Is it a localizm?
Afro Supremes became "the wheels to have" as soon as they were available, but they cost roughly twice as much as Crager SS's so they were for the more "serious" customizers. (I don't know why the cost more, they definitely weren't made better.)
Chrome reverse with WWWs are ok on a 61 or older car done in a '61 or older style, but the GM show cars had skinny whtes back in '53 and customs started showing up with them in '57. they were dame near a requirement on top, show winning lvel customs by '62.
It's you're car...blah, blah, jdnebrms...

[/ QUOTE ] wide wites were around , but when the new firestones and a couple other brands came out ,you usally changed to a 14 inch a lower tire with a narrow whitewall ,they got called pinstriped pinners for short, some even hada narrow white with a 3/8 or so narrow white pinstripped around the regular white wall, but basically narrow white walls are thought of as "pinners" still reconized term today, most people dont notice ,
