I think it's time to give the shitty drums the boot on my '60 Chevy.
I'm thinking about economics here, I know that GM discs and calipers are dirt cheap, so I'm not sure I need to buy a bomplete kit.
What have you folks done on the cheap?

Thanks for any info.

Nothings cheap when it comes to disc brake conversions. I gave up and bought a kit from ElPolacko. It comes out about the same in the end. Start figuring up parts house prices, you'll be amazed at what it costs and you have to do all the legwork.

Nads,

Call Terry Collet at Silent Knight Chassis (406) 248-1939, he has done several personal 60's elky/wagon/sedan. On the cheap and has the recipe memorized, parts #'s and years for swaps etc.. Nice guy easy to BS with.

Seems like that question came up on the chevytalk board a while back....something about 63-82 Corvette spindles and mid/late 70s Impala rotors...I forget http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I bought brackets from one of those brake companies up north(they were assholes) Hunnerd bucks. Then calipers, rotors, bearings, seals and asst. shit from the parts store.

'65-'82 Vette disc brake spindles, rotors and calipers are a direct exchange. You will need to use your steering arms drilled to the Vette size as the Vette arms are too high or too low - I don't remember which. I used this setup in a '61 along with a booster/MC/distribution block from a late 2nd gen Monte Carlo. I actually moved all that stuff to the outside a bit to clear a 454, but pretty easy fabrication work. I did it 13-14 years ago but all that stuff is fairly common and relatively inexpensive - even for 2nd generation Vette parts. I liked the results and didn't have to dick around with somebodies kit with unknown parts and possibly poorly designed brackets, etc.

As for dropped spindles, don't see any reason for them...about a coil to a coil and a half out of your springs and you'll be whacking gas station tank bumps with the front crossmember. That from a guy who generally doesn't believe it's possible to make a car too low. But maybe Florida roads are a lot better....

The Corvettes are rear steer, the Impala/Biscayne is front steer. That is the reason for the steering arm change. Otherwise the kit does work and drops the car about an inch.

On the otherhand, I can get you guys a HAMB discount on this stuff,,,, CLICK HERE (http://www.classicperform.com/product-pages/5864-cbk-d.htm)

Not real cheap but look at what you are getting, Includes: 2" Drop Spindles, Rotors, Calipers , Bearings, Seals , Spindles Nuts, Dust Caps, Hoses and Proportioning Valve

Also includes:

Brake Booster 7", 8" or 9"

I have a real nice 60 Impala Hard top with this exact set up on it, drives real nice and stops well too!

My 60 Elky is front steer. Was that a typo?

nowhere near cheap...but a while back I was working quite a bit and picked up the kit from www.mpbrakes.com... (http://www.mpbrakes.com...) so far so good. again cost 2 arms a leg and an extra toe

You can get them from Superior Spindles. I bought the front set up from them. I haven't installed them yet, but the hardware is really good stuff. Stainless lines, new everything, and cross drilled rotors. The whole kit was around $700, but you can buy the spindles only and find the other hardware from the parts store. The rotors are from the turbo trans ams and specialty camaros 88-92. They not even close the same as regualar 82-92 f-body brakes. It was more cost effective to buy the entire kit.
