View Full Version : OT...Old Greyhound Busses
I found a really cool old Greyhound bus. The guy wants to sell it for a good price but the windshields are busted. He said it's a 1951.
Are there any good websites for old busses. What about junkyards or parts dealers. Know of a junk one with good glass? Anybody got one?
This thing would make a great party bus/camper.

I'm somewhat into them. They only made like 1500 of the silversides all together between like 49-51. I might be off on the yar block - but am pretty sure on the 1500. The best way to learn more would be to start dooing googles on "Silversides" since thats what they were referred to as.
I have always wanted one to convert one into a motorhome since I love the old busses done up that way. We currently camp in a 35' Bluebird with a FC Catapillar 210 Diesel and love it.
If you don't mind sharing, what else can you tell us about it concerning the condition, location, and price.
Thanks,
John

It'll be a diesel, 4 speed manual, 22" steering wheel, no power steering.
This bus looked to be in pretty good condition. The widshields are the big hold back on buying it. He's asking $1500 for it. One of the side panels is bent a little but it is a short piece that can be made easily. Other than that the only rot I saw was in the step to get in it.
Somebody put a big block Chrysler in it. Sorta thought it might be too small for it. What do you think?
A friend's father has a 48 which the windshields look a little different on. His is in rough shape and I was just gonna ait till he got tired of it and try to get it. Then I stumble on this one the other day. It's in better shape. I just need to find some money.

There is a guy at Hershey every year that has one over in the Chocolate field, I think it is from that era. There was a local guy that made a air powered leveling kit for converted busses. If you plan to slam this one I'll try to find him. Check the eBay list of bus collectables, might give you a lead on things. Do you plan to buff the stainless or engine turn it? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for the silversides clue.
I was told my truck was the shop truck for the Greyhound bus terminal in L.A. when these busses were new. The color was supposed to be the Greyhound color.

That's the reason for this artwork. It doesn't look like a match to me but I love the story any way.
Will "Scotty town" be replaced by the "Greyhound pound"?

So What, they call those buses Clippers here. By Ansair I think. We were at a rod run in Narrandera here years ago and the Clipper bus club were having a weekend away. They were staying in the same camp grounds as us. Like 12 of these lined up side by side. Most converted to motor homes. These guys are just like hot rodders, only on a grander scale. On the Saturday night there was cruising around the main drag. A few of the buses were cutting laps and picking up any one that wanted to ride.
Interesting note a few of these guys have never had there buses at there homes because they live on roads where the load limit is to low for the weight of the bus.
I think the big block would pull 'your hot rod bus' OK.
I got pictures somewhere, will have to scan them. Haven't got time right now! Geoff akaWhodaky

The Flexible Flyer is a little red wagon for children, no matter what that idiot claims on Ebay. The Flxible Clipper is a Bus, please note the correct spelling for the Bus. Here is my 1954 used as a Pikes Peak tour bus when new. Just in case someone doesnt 'get it', the screen door is a joke.

You are right. Silversides are GMC products. Flxibles were made by the Flxible Corporation in Loudonville Ohio.. Flxible started out making sidecars for Harleys in 1912. Hugo Young had a idea for a new type of motorcycle sidecar; one which would permit the third wheel to tilt and stay on the ground when the motorcycle leaned while going around curves either to the left or right. The sidecar was attached to the motorcycle with a "flexible" connection. The first 'E' in Flxible was omitted so the name could be copyrighted.

2 years ago I found three 1946-47 Silver sides just north of Austin Texas off I-35 and they are for sale and two of them had drivetrain upgrades along with Air conditioning and power steering.
Don't know if they're still there but it's posible to find them still around.
