Just a heads-up on a great how-to for building aircraft type seats for a trad rod in Dec 2004 Rod & Custom. Looks fairly simple. Stan

Another option for bomber seat plans can be found HERE. (http://www.volksrods.com/id61.htm) A warning for those with weak stomachs... the link leads to a (gasp) VW site. The plans are $10 and the cash goes to help fund the site the same way HAMB Auctions work here. The seats look like this...

Or you take the $10 and use it on some sheetmetal.

I should say the Ego-Rama PICKS as in the contestants, not the pics as in the coverage http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif What can I say I'm an idiot http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Haven't seen the magazine artice yet, buy here's one that I made. I made a pair of them for a friend of a friend. Copied an original aircraft seat that was kicking around. Not too hard to make except for rolling the wire around the edge. I ended up with about $60 worth of materials and 12 hours in each seat.

TMan & AeroC :Great looking seats! What gauge material? I'm just before ordering the material for a pair for my 26T Track . I thought of using 5/16" or 3/8" 6061 round rod (welded to edge) instead of rolling /wire edge.

I used .040 6061 T3 and annealed it along the edge to roll the wire. If I make some more, I'll probably use 5052 since it's quite a bit cheaper and wouldn't sacrifice any strength. For the wire I used 1/4" mild steel rod. The rod around the edge does more than just round it off, it really ties the whole seat together and adds a lot of strength.

Since mine will be covered, I used 18G steel. My edge is HEMMED flat. I started to wire it and didnt like the test piece I did. It has just the right amount of flex and is VERY comfy. I took my pattern, which looked like the ones in R&C http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif and "tested" it on several sized folks. the base is roughly 16x16. Since I MIGed mine together I had onnly about 3 hours per in em?

I would say that it was the most fun I have had on any recent project and recommendo anyone try a set.

Trey, I wanna see your bench!

BTW, I did mine last month BEFORE the new R&C came out. I was copying the British Sports car look that ScarryLarry has in his truck. Do a search for Bomber seats. We have covered it many times!
