So I've got this old fridge. Some of you may have seen it. It works great. however, it smells, even when it's plugged in. I've washed it, I've scrubbed it, I've bleached it, I've even used the stuff our custodians use. Still it smells, and it transfers the smell into the food, then it tastes like old fridge. Any suggestions on getting the smell out? Thanks.

Put an open box of baking soda inside. Did you clean he drain pan under the refer? It collects water and smells if it isn't cleaned.

Rented a house one time & the previous left food in the fridge .The landlord had the power cut off . Talk about gross!!! Washed it out with every substance known and still stunk...Old-timer next door told me " Wash it with a solution of baking soda & water , stuff it full of wadded-up newspaper ,leave it with the door shut for the weekend "....worked like a charm... something about the carbon in the ink , etc

That's the stuff. I've got a '50 GM Frigidaire I got from the spring cleaning days, and it cleaned up great.

Sorry buddy, it will never be right. At some point, the power went out while they were on vacation or some other major malfunction happened. It's the stench of rotten flesh. Kind of like the myth of the cheap Corvette that somebody died in. I started out as a refrigeration mechanic. I've my nose in many a smelly box. (That didn't come out right) You can keep several open bowls of baking soda in there. Also try open bowls of charcoal. The smell has worked its way into the insulation. There’s not much you can do now.

This came up on the HAMB before! The big answer was Charcoal, real not briquets and PEELED APPLES! Something about the apples absorbing the smell.........................

Can the insulation be replaced, if that's what's holding the smell?

Can it be left out in the sun for a couple days?

you can take it apart and put in new insulation,
no diferent than what was used in houses nowadays i would take it all apart and then reinsulate it new stuff much better insulation,
